September 2013

September meeting and Chapter Birthday Party:  September 28, 2013
Place and time to be announced.

(As of 9/23/13)
As mentioned in the Newsletter, September is our Chapter's 72nd birthday. We will be celebrating at noon on Saturday, 28 September, at noon at Jean Murry's house, 33 Oakland Hills, Chesterfield MO. This will be a pot luck, so please bring a covered dish to share. Please let Jean Murry know if you plan to attend the meeting: 314-469-3541. Birthday cake and ice cream will be provided.

Please mark your calendar for the September meeting.  This will most likely be the last membership meeting prior to the NCS Fall meeting at the DoubleTree from October 11-13.  We will be stuffing the goody bags and discussing the scheduling for the hospitality room.  By that time we should know how many people will be registered for the pizza party and Creve Coeur museum tour, and can plan transportation to these venues.   This will also be our Chapter Birthday party pot luck, so we hope to have a large turn-out of members.

NCS Fall Meeting:
If you have not already done so, please get your registration for the NCS Fall meeting to Martha Norman, 160 Cedar Lane, Ironton MO 63650.   You only need to register for those events you actually plan to attend, and full registration is just $99 for Chapter members.  Registration forms are available on the NCS website: www.ncs99s.org .  If you have any questions please contact Martha at 573-546-7472.

We need items for the Silent Auction.  Please bring new or lightly used  aviation books, aviation jewelry, or other items that you would like to donate, to the Chapter meeting in September or to the NCS meeting in October.  We will have the Silent Auction set up all day Saturday in the fly market room.  “Winners” will be announced at the end of the banquet on Saturday evening.

There are three changes to the meeting schedule.  1)  Jean and I will be at the hotel early on Friday and registration will be open from about 10 am to 5 pm.  2)  Wanda Johnston will be selling her Ninety Nines logoed merchandise at the fly market and we will have the fly market open from 10 am to 5 pm on Friday and before the business meeting and after the luncheon until about 6 pm on Saturday.  3)  The luncheon speaker will be Ed Guinness, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University.  He will be speaking on “exploring the surface of Mars with Rovers – Opportunity and Curiosity.  Our banquet speaker is former astronaut Sandra Magnus, Ph. D.

Chapter News:
The Chapter has been invited to participate in two events in November, so mark your calendars.

On Saturday, November 16 the Greater St. Louis Business Aviation Association (GSLBAA) is sponsoring their 1st annual trivia night to benefit the GSLBAA Educational Foundation and the Wings of Hope.  It will be held at CBC High School, 1850 La Salle Dr. at I-64 and I-270.   Doors open at 6 pm and trivia begins at 7 pm.  Bring your own snacks and drinks.  The cost is $25 per contestant or $200 for a table of 8.  We would like to have at least one table of Ninety Nines.

On Wednesday, November 20, the NGA (Defense Mapping Agency) will dedicate a conference room to the GSL Ninety Nines first chairman and former WASP, Del Scharr.  We have been invited to attend the dedication ceremony.   I will let the chapter know as soon as we get place and time information.  Members wishing to attend will need to let us know in advance since the NGA will need to get clearances prepared for us individually.

Nine members and guests attended our luncheon meeting at Creve Coeur Airport on July 21. As you can see from the photo below, Nelda Lee looks really great following her therapy.  A photo of the happy lunch group is attached to the newsletter.

Ninety Nines News:
he Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fund Trustees have announced a new program with awards up to $3000 for student pilots to complete their Recreational, Sport Pilot, or Private Pilot certificate in any aircraft.  Formerly called the New Pilot Award, the Trustees will now give up to four Fly Now Awards each year, two with an application deadline in September, and two with a deadline in March.  Applicants must be an Associate Members of The 99s to apply and must have a demonstrated need for financial assistance.  In addition, the applicant must have a formal Mentor from her Chapter for support and guidance. The financial awards are given in stages as the student reaches certain milestones in her training.  Full information is available at http://www.ninety-nines.org/userfiles/file/Fly%20Now%20brochure.pdf

July meeting:  July 21 at noon – Lunch at Creve Coeur Airport

Over lunch we’ll touch base on where everything is for the NCS section meeting that we are hosting in October.  With luck CAVU will prevail and there will be a lot of interesting aircraft on the field.

Please call Jean Murry at 314-469-3541 if you plan to attend so she can give an approximate headcount to the folks at Creve Coeur Airport.

Chapter News:

IT’S TIME TO RENEW CHAPTER DUES.   Chapter dues are again $10.  If you would like a paper copy of Waypoint mailed to your home, please include $10 for the Waypoint subscription.  Waypoint can be accessed electronically free of charge at the North Central Section web site:  www.ncs99s.org.  Dues should be sent to Martha Norman, 160 Cedar Lane, Ironton, MO 63650.

Ninety Nines News:
The 2013 Ninety Nines International Conference is taking place this weekend in Bozeman, Montana, July 9-14.  Minnetta Gardinier of the Iowa Chapter will vote our proxies since nobody from the chapter was able to attend.

The Ninety Nines International Board of Directors has reduced its funding of NIFA (National Intercollegiate Flying Association) to $500 this year.  In order to cover the NIFA sponsorship fee of $1500, an anonymous donor made up the difference this year.  In addition the Ninety Nines sponsors the Women’s Achievement Award at the National SAFECON each year.  In May this year, additional awards of $700, $500, and $300 were made to three deserving women.  The Board of Directors is asking the Chapters and individual Ninety Nines to consider donating to NIFA in the next fiscal year.  Checks should be made payable to the Ninety Nines, Inc. but note NIFA Donation or Women’s Achievement Award on the memo line.

January meeting: Saturday, January 26, 2013

Midwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show – 9 am

Ninety Nines meeting – 1 pm

Location: Maryland Hts Centre, 2344 McKelvey Rd. 314-738-2599

Directions to the Maryland Hts Centre: The Centre is located just west of I-270 between I-70 and Dorsett Rd – you can actually see the Centre from the highway. Get to I-270 by your favorite route. Exit at Dorsett Rd and take Dorsett Rd west to the first light (McKelvey Rd.). Turn right on McKelvey Rd, go north about ½ mile and turn right on Ameling Rd. Ameling ends in McKelvey Rd, turn left and go about 0.2 miles. The Centre will be on your right. There is abundant free parking.

This is the event schedule for Saturday morning MACTS:

9:00 Welcome and Introductions: Master of Ceremonies – Mike Young
9:00-9:50 Runway Safety Games – Al Gorthy, Central Region FAA Office of Runway Safety
10:00-10:50 Don’t Let Human Factors Bite You – Cathè Fish, National Accident Prevention Counselor & AOPA Air Safety Institute Instructor
11:00-11:50 Pilots Bill of Rights – Congressman from NW Missouri & Active Pilot, Sam Graves
12:00-12:50 What you need to Know About Aviation Medicals – Sara Newton, FAA Medical Division

There will also be an Awards Banquet and Silent Auction at the Maryland Hts. Centre from 6:15-9:00 pm Saturday evening. On Sunday from 1:00-3:00 pm, also at the Maryland Hts. Centre, Learn to Fly – Adult and Youth Programs featuring Craig O’Mara, program director, and Dave Desmond, Chief F-18 Test Pilot, Military Tactical Flight Operations, The Boeing Company.

We will again be raffling a goodie basket to earn money for the Del Scharr Scholarship Fund. We already have two bottles of wine for the basket so no additional wine is needed. However, if you have small cheeses, candies, crackers, cookies, non-perishable sausages, etc., please get them to Jean Murry (314-469-3541) before Thursday so she can complete the basket.

Our meeting will be a planning session for the Fall North Central Section meeting that we are hosting at the DoubleTree Hotel in Chesterfield, 11-12 October 2013. We have a small Chapter and we need everyone to participate if at all possible.

On Saturday we need to make the following decisions

1. Theme for the meeting
2. Activities:

  • Suggested for Friday evening (this will be part of the registration fee) – pizza party at Wings of Hope
  • Suggested for Saturday morning (guest and 49½ activity during the NCS general meeting) – Tour of the museum at Creve Coeur Airport
  • Suggested for the Saturday afternoon activity (everyone)
  • Tour of the TRACON in Weldon Springs
  • Forest Park – Choice ot
  • Zoo (Libby Yunger could do a 45 min docent tour)
  • Art Museum
  • Science Center and IMAX Theater
  • MO History Museum
  • Faust Park Butterfly House and Carousel

Other suggestions are welcome. Note that the TRACON and Forest Park Museums would be free except for transportation and Libby Yunger may have enough free passes for interested people to attend the IMAX Theater at the Science Center.

3. Hospitality Room venue: Do we want to rent a suite in the hotel for two days for the hospitality room or use one of the conference center rooms? Using a hotel suite would add about $5 to the meeting registration fee but would allow us to have coffee makers, hot plates, crock pots, or other heating appliances available. We could also bring in wine and/or beer to have available for guests. There would be running water and rest room facilities. The Chapter could use the bedroom (which is a separate room) for storage and overnight accommodations. If we had the hospitality room in a conference room there would be no additional cost for the room. However, we could not have anything that heats in the room so we would have to bring in coffee in a thermos. We could have water, sodas and juices but no alcoholic beverages; they would need to be purchased at the Lounge. The room would have tables and chairs but no comfortable furniture. Rest rooms would be down the hall.

We need volunteers for the following jobs (if you don’t volunteer, you might be assigned a job)

  1. Activities Committee – activities will need to be finalized for the Spring and Summer Waypoint issues and for Libby to announce when she hands out registration forms at the NCS Spring meeting in Cleveland in April. We hope to decide the activities at the meeting on Saturday, but this committee will make all arrangements with the venues and transportation arrangements (as needed)
  2. Airport Committee – work with management at Spirit Airport to arrange reduced fuel prices, free tie-downs and reduced rates for rental cars for members flying into KSUS.
  3. Silent Auction Committee – we need folks to beat the bushes for donated silent auction items and set up and administer the silent auction
  4. Bags and Badge Holders – we need folks to find a company or group to donate bags and badge holders (preferably badge holders on a lanyard rather than with pins) for all registrants.
  5. Fly Market – we need a contact person for groups selling merchandise at the fly market and to meet the vendors and make certain they have everything they need..

The following committees have already been established:

Hotel – Libby Yunger (lead), Jean Murry, Vivian Waters

Publicity and Artwork – Martha Norman (lead), Vivian Waters (artwork)

Speakers – Vivian Waters, Sue Mathias, Nelda Lee

Registration Desk – Jean Murry, Martha Norman

Financials – Martha Norman

Hospitality Room – Anne Mongiovi, Barbara Cunningham

Since the hospitality room committee will also need to get food, beverages, and supplies for the room, as well as to make certain these things are available and do not run out during the conference, we need one or two additional people for this committee.

Chapter News:

The library exhibit has been removed from the Richmond Hts. Library and Libby Yunder now has all the items at home. If anyone would like to get their items back at the meeting on Saturday, please contact Libby at girlpilot@sbcglobal.net. Otherwise they will be used for the Women in Aviation exhibit at the GSL Air & Space Museum (see following item).

Carmelo Turdo has asked if the Ninety Nines would like to develop a program for Women in Aviation Week, March 4-10, 2013. We will use some of the items from our Library exhibit for a new exhibit under the Amelia Earhart route map at the GSL Air & Space Museum. Carmelo also suggested that we prepare talks or another type of program. Libby will try to contact Carmelo before Saturday for more information about this proposed program.

Christmas/Holiday Party: Saturday, December 8, at 12:30 pm
Highlands Golf Course Clubhouse in Forest Park
5163 Clayton Ave

Bring some non-perishable food or household items for donation to the Circle of Concern.

We will order off the menu. We need to give the folks at the clubhouse an idea of how many of us will attend so please respond to Libby Yunger (girlpilot@sbcglobal.net) or Jean Murry (jeanemilym@att.net or 314-469-3541) before Friday, December 7. Yes, Jean now has e-mail – her kids gave her an e-notebook as an early Christmas present!

The Highlands is the new 9-hole golf course in Forest Park. To get to the Highlands Clubhouse, take your favorite route to I-64/US40. Exit at Hampton Ave and go north into Forest Park. Take the first right exit by the traffic circle (Wells Dr.) Stay on Wells Dr to the next traffic circle (near the Jewel Box). Take the first right off the traffic circle toward the Park Security station, the golf course will be on your left. This short road ends at Clayton Ave. Turn left on Clayton Ave keeping the golf course on your left. You will pass holes 1, 2, and 3 before getting to the road (on the left) to the Highlands Clubhouse. The people at the Highlands are very friendly – their phone number is 314-531-7773 if you need a little directional guidance. There have been many changes to the park roads in recent years, so if you haven’t been to Forest Park in awhile, getting around can be a little confusing but the signage tends to be good.

Chapter News:

We will be hosting the Fall North Central Section Meeting in St. Louis next September…actually I’m pushing for late September/early October since I’m not usually here in September. We will need a group of members to work on the planning so that we can get information out to the membership in the Spring. So far Jean Murry, Martha Norman, Vivian Waters and Libby Yunger have volunteered to help with the planning, and we welcome the help of any other members or non-members who would like to participate. I hope we can begin organizing who will do what at the Christmas/Holiday Party.

Carmelo Turdo has asked if the Ninety Nines would like to develop a program for Women in Aviation Week, March 4-10, 2013. I have offered to use some of the items from our Library exhibit for a new exhibit under the Amelia Earhart route map at the GSL Air & Space Museum. Carmelo also suggested that we prepare talks or another type of program. I’ll have need to get together with him to determine where this program would be given and to whom.

Our Chapter library exhibit was at the Maplewood Library in October/November and will be at the Richmond Hts. Library in December. We do not plan to continue with the library exhibit after December, except perhaps for Women in Aviation week next March. Libby Yunger spoke on A Century of Women in Aviation at the Maplewood Library in November. The talk was well-attended, thanks to Bob Kraemer who notified every aviation group in St. Louis. The report of the talk that appeared on the Aeroexperience.com blog site is appended to the Newsletter or can be seen at: http://aeroexperience.blogspot.com/2012/11/women-in-aviation-is-theme-of.html
Ninety Nines News:

Nominations are now open for the Ninety Nines Award of Achievement for Contributions to the Ninety-Nines, for Contributions to Aviation, and for Humanitarian Efforts and for the Award of Merit for non-Ninety Nines and for the George Palmer Putnam Award for non-Ninety Nines. Any Ninety-Nines Chapter, Section or Trust can submit a nomination by January 15, 2013. Submit a one-page letter signed by two officers or trustees including the name, address, and telephone number of the nominee or next-of-kin, if the nominee is deceased. Up to three additional pages of substantiating material may be attached to the letter, which should be sent to International Headquarters in Oklahoma City to the attention of the Awards Committee.

For those of you on Facebook, Minnetta Gardinier sent the following message:

Please consider joining the “North Central Section 99s” Facebook group. It is a networking opportunity for us to spread the word about the 99s, to share our aviation stories and experiences, to advertise our 99s events across the Section, and to perhaps offer/share rides among our group.

Simply search for the site on Facebook – “North Central Section 99s” – and request to join the group. Members may post on the site, as well as upload pictures/videos, and add your Chapter events to the calendar section. Members may also suggest new members to be added, so feel free to do so. In addition to adding other 99s from your Chapters, you might consider adding somebody who might not yet have joined the 99s. It could be a great way to draw them into our organization.

For those, who might not yet have a Facebook account, you can do so easily with an email address. If you wish to keep your personal FB page private, you can do that by marking all the privacy settings to ONLY ME (private). For me, I’ve set my stuff to FRIENDS only, but explore the options, if you’re just getting set up. Finally, all NCS 99s news will continue to be published on the web site and in the Waypoint.

Women in Aviation Is Theme of Presentation at Maplewood, MO Library

By Carmelo Turdo

Libby Yunger, Chairman of the Greater St. Louis Ninety-Nines, recently gave her presentation, "A Century of Women in Aviation," at the Maplewood Public Library in celebration of National Aviation Month. The Ninety-Nines, an international organization of women pilots, was founded in 1929 by the first ninety-nine licensed women pilots including Amelia Earhart. Yunger discussed the contributions of women in aviation from Katharine Wright to the present, focusing on those women who broke barriers by being the "first" in various areas of aviation. Here are some examples: Katharine Wright: Influenced the development of the Wright Flyer, 1903+

E. Lillian Todd: First women aircraft designer, 1910 Therese Peltier: First women to solo in a heavier than air powered aircraft, 1908 Elise Deroche: First women to earn international pilot's license, 1910 Blanche Scott and Bessica Raiche: First American women to solo, 1910 Harriette Quimby: First licensed American woman pilot, 1911; first woman to cross the English Channel, 1912 Ruth Law: First woman to fly non-stop from Chicago to New York, 1916 Bessie Coleman: First black woman to earn international pilot's license, 1921 Women's Air Derby was started in 1929, leading to women's involvement in air racing.

Amelia Earhart, undoubtedly the best marketed woman pilot of all time, was the first woman to: fly the Atlantic Ocean non-stop as a passenger in 1928, fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, fly a solo transcontinental round-trip flight also in 1932, fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland in 1935 and was lost attempting a round-the-world flight in 1937. Yunger commented,"If I ask a group of non-pilots to name a woman pilot - it's Amelia Earhart. I never hear any other name but Amelia Earhart...And I think that's because there's just this mystique: 'What happened to Amelia?'" 75 years later, that question remains unanswered.

Other topics covered included air races with male competitors to the present day; women's service in World War II and subsequent armed conflicts, including combat roles in current conflicts; aerobatic champions including Betty Skelton and Patty Wagstaff, and women astronauts.

This presentation is highly recommend for adult and youth groups of all types. If you would like to arrange for Libby to speak to your organization, contact The Aero Experience at aeroexperience@att.net for more information.

October Meeting: Saturday, October 20, at noon
Chapter Birthday Party and Potluck lunch
Jean Murry’s home, 33 Oakland Hills Dr

Bring your favorite goodie for everyone to share.   If you have any Chapter or aviation memorabilia you would like to share please bring that along as well.

Jean lives in the Four Seasons on the west side of Woods Mill Rd just south of the Dierberg’s shopping center at Olive and Woods Mill.  Exit I-270 at Olive Rd. West.  Go approximately 3 miles and turn south (left) on Woods Mill Rd.  Turn right at the first intersection past the shopping center (Broadmoor Dr) and then left at the first intersection (Oakland Hills Dr.)

I hope all of you have been thinking about ways we can become more visible in the aviation community, particularly to female student pilots.  We will be brainstorming ideas at our Chapter Birthday party. We also will have a Chapter memorial for Jan Pocock, who died on October 2, and for Delia Greer who died on July 23.  Please share your favorite Jan Pocock and/or Delia Greer stories with the rest of the group.  Ruby Fudoli’s son has asked for assistance is finding out more about his parents activities in aviation in the St. Louis Area.  We would like to pass on any information or stories to him.  You can bring information to the Chapter Birthday Party, e-mail information to girlpilot@sbcglobal.net or call Jean Murry at 314-469-3541.

Chapter News:
There will be no meeting in November.  However, Libby Yunger will be speaking on the history of women in aviation at the Maplewood Library on Thursday, November 15, from 7-8 pm.  The Maplewood Library is located at 7550 Lohmeyer Ave, one block north of Manchester between Martini Dr. and Bredell Ave. (behind the Maplewood City Hall and Maplewood-Richmond Hts. High School).  We hope many of our members will be able to attend.

Jean Murry is working on plans for our Christmas luncheon.  If you have a favorite restaurant with a relatively private table for 10-12 people, please contact Jean at 314-469-5341 and she will check it out.

Ruby Fudoli’s son’s request for information about his mother got us thinking that it would be good to have brief biographies of our Chapter members.  Once upon a time Sally Siebe started this project, however, the biographies were lost from our Chapter website.  Rather than writing answers to a series of questions, a strategy that did not work very well when Sally tried it, it might be fun to verbally share with each other highlights our personal aviation history, projects, and triumphs.  Perhaps we can try this at some of our future meetings, and the resulting mini-biographies will be shared in subsequent newsletters as member profiles.

Ninety Nines News:
At the next International Conference, two International Directors and Trustees for the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum, Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fund, Endowment Fund, and Museum of Women Pilots will be elected.  Anyone wishing to be a candidate for any of the above position must file an Intent to Seek Election Form by October 31, 2012.  Forms are available in the Library in the Members Area of the Ninety-Nines website:  www.ninety-nines.org.

If any of our members are interested in applying for 2013 Amelia Earhart Scholarships, the Vicki Cruse Memorial Scholarship for Emergency Maneuver Training, or the New Pilot Award, applications must be received by the Chapter by December 1, and by the Section AE Scholarship Chairman by December 15.  Further details are available at www.ninety-nines.org/index/cfm/scholarships.htm

Member News:   As many of you already know, Jan Pocock passed away on Tuesday, October 2   She had been ill for approximately one year prior to her death.  Jan joined the Ninety Nines in 1964 soon after earning her pilot’s license at Arrowhead Airport.  She was a Life Member of the Ninety Nines, past chairman of our Chapter, and long-time Chapter scholarship chairman, administering the Del Scharr Scholarship and helping Chapter members win Amelia Earhart Scholarships from the International organization.  Jan was also a Life Member of the Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum and a long-time member of its Board of Directors.  She was a member of the Gateway Chapter of Missouri Pilots Association.  Several members of Jan’s family were pilots, and she became determined to earn her pilot’s license early in her tenure as a flight dispatcher for Monsanto Corp., a position she held until her retirement in 1985.  Ruth Bohnert, Gussie Freese, Sue Mathias, Jean Murry, Vivian Waters, and Libby Yunger attended Jan’s memorial service at Schrader Funeral Home on Thursday, October 11.  Libby will be preparing a New Horizons article for the 99 News and would like to borrow a flattering black and white or color photograph of Jan that can be scanned for use in the article.  The photo need not be recent, but it needs to be in reasonably good condition.

We are sorry to report that Martha Norman’s sister died of a blood clot following surgery.  Martha is with her sister’s family in Texas and will most likely miss the Chapter Birthday Party.  Her sister had been working on a cookbook that Martha plans to complete as a memorial.  Our Chapter sends its heart-felt condolences to Martha.
If you haven’t yet looked in the September/October issue of 99 News, there is an article on Jean Murry and Delia Greer receiving the Award of Achievement for Humanitarian Efforts on p. 11 and a New Horizons article on Delia on p. 30.

If you know of internship opportunities in education or hospitality, Susan Van Matre would like to hear from you as she completes her for a M.Ed. in Adult and Higher Education Management.  She is looking for internships at colleges or other fun and interesting places in the area for next Spring.  You can contact Susan at slvanmatre@gmail.com .

Aviation News:  A lot of airport Open Houses and aviation events are planned during the next three months:
27 October – Third Annual Airport Day at St. Charles County Airport.  Pumpkin Drop at St.  Charles Flying Service. EAA will have a lunch concessin from 12-5 pm and the  Corvette Club will have vintage and current Corvettes on display.
27 October – Memorial Service for Carl Cochran, former Ozark Pilot and FBO manager, at  Washington Airport

August Event: Tour of the Space Museum in Bonne Terre, MO
11 AM Saturday, 18 August

The museum is located at 116 East School Street in Bonne Terre. Curator Earl Mullins will be our tour guide. The museum website is: www.space-mo.org. The folks at the museum say there are several good restaurants in Bonne Terre, so we will plan to have lunch in town after the tour. GUESTS ARE WELCOME.
Several of us will meet at Jean Murry’s house in Chesterfield, MO, at 9 am on Saturday to ride together down to Bonne Terre. Jean lives at 33 Oakland Hills Dr. That is in the Four Seasons development on the west side of Woods Mill Rd just south of the Dierberg’s shopping center at Olive and Woods Mill. Some of you would probably prefer to drive to Bonne Terre on your own and you should plan to meet us at the Museum at 11 am. To get to Bonne Terre, go to I-55 south by your favorite route. At Festus, exit I-55 onto US-67 south toward Bonne Terre/Farmington. Exit US-67 onto MO-47 north into Bonne Terre (the road is actually going west, at this point, but it is MO-47 north). After about 0.5 miles, take a slight left onto Park Avenue and at the second intersection turn left onto Fite St. The Museum is at Fite and School St. Bonne Terre is approximately 50 miles south of the I-55/Jefferson Barracks Bridge (I-270) interchange. We need to let the Museum know approximately how many people are coming, so please let Jean Murry (314-469-3541) or Libby Yunger (girlpilot@sbcglobal.net) know if you plan to attend. Also let us know if you will be joining the group that is traveling from Jean’s house so we know to expect you and whether or not we will need a van.

Chapter News:
I received the following e-mail from Keith Mueller: I have a nontraditional career specialist here at SWIC (Amy Markus) who is able to be at Scott on Saturday Sept 15th for sure, possibly also Sunday the 16th. We are trying to promote aviation to the women’s groups and need to have someone here to help us be able to provide information. Scott typically draws more than 50,000 people and this is great opportunity to promote aviation with the women’s groups. SWIC is working with Trans States Airlines to recruit students for training programs and pilot and aviation management personnel for the airline. Definitely want to get more women into the career path.

We are also setting up a safety seminar at Mid America in the late fall, again we are needing representative from the women’s groups, trying to make this a combination safety seminar, young eagles event, fly in, introductory flights, Jr ROTC etc group event. Neither Jean Murry nor Libby Yunger will be available the weekend of 15 September. Is there someone from the Chapter who would like to represent the Ninety Nines at the Scott Open House that weekend? Please contact Keith Mueller directly at keith.Mueller@swic.edu for further information.

I hope all of you have been thinking about ways we can become more visible in the aviation community, particularly to female student pilots. We will be brainstorming ideas at our Chapter Birthday party. The party is tentatively scheduled for September 29 since our chairman will be out of town for most of September and the Chapter anniversary is in September. However, we could skip the September meeting altogether and have our Chapter party at our October meeting on Saturday, October 20. This will be a pot luck luncheon at Jean Murry’s house followed by cake and ice cream and, with luck, some really good ideas. Please let Libby or Jean know which date you would prefer for our Chapter party.

 Member News:
As many of you already know, Delia Greer left us quite unexpectedly last month. She died on July 23 in her home of a massive stroke just 9 days after she and Jean Murry had received the Ninety Nines award for humanitarian service for their work with Wings of Hope. Our Chapter will be sending a donation to Wings of Hope in her memory. A memorial service is being planned but has not yet been scheduled. I have included with the Newsletter an article on Delia and Jean that appeared in the July 27 issue of Ladue News: (http://www.laduenews.com/living/fly-girls/article_d67e9390-d73a-11e1-919c-001a4bcf6878.html )
For members who receive only the paper copy of the newsletter, I have also included the article on Delia from the St. Louis Business Journal that was included with the e-mail announcement of Delia’s death: http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/stories/2006/10/09/focus15.html?page=all
