October 2012

October Meeting: Saturday, October 20, at noon
Chapter Birthday Party and Potluck lunch
Jean Murry’s home, 33 Oakland Hills Dr

Bring your favorite goodie for everyone to share.   If you have any Chapter or aviation memorabilia you would like to share please bring that along as well.

Jean lives in the Four Seasons on the west side of Woods Mill Rd just south of the Dierberg’s shopping center at Olive and Woods Mill.  Exit I-270 at Olive Rd. West.  Go approximately 3 miles and turn south (left) on Woods Mill Rd.  Turn right at the first intersection past the shopping center (Broadmoor Dr) and then left at the first intersection (Oakland Hills Dr.)

I hope all of you have been thinking about ways we can become more visible in the aviation community, particularly to female student pilots.  We will be brainstorming ideas at our Chapter Birthday party. We also will have a Chapter memorial for Jan Pocock, who died on October 2, and for Delia Greer who died on July 23.  Please share your favorite Jan Pocock and/or Delia Greer stories with the rest of the group.  Ruby Fudoli’s son has asked for assistance is finding out more about his parents activities in aviation in the St. Louis Area.  We would like to pass on any information or stories to him.  You can bring information to the Chapter Birthday Party, e-mail information to girlpilot@sbcglobal.net or call Jean Murry at 314-469-3541.

Chapter News:
There will be no meeting in November.  However, Libby Yunger will be speaking on the history of women in aviation at the Maplewood Library on Thursday, November 15, from 7-8 pm.  The Maplewood Library is located at 7550 Lohmeyer Ave, one block north of Manchester between Martini Dr. and Bredell Ave. (behind the Maplewood City Hall and Maplewood-Richmond Hts. High School).  We hope many of our members will be able to attend.

Jean Murry is working on plans for our Christmas luncheon.  If you have a favorite restaurant with a relatively private table for 10-12 people, please contact Jean at 314-469-5341 and she will check it out.

Ruby Fudoli’s son’s request for information about his mother got us thinking that it would be good to have brief biographies of our Chapter members.  Once upon a time Sally Siebe started this project, however, the biographies were lost from our Chapter website.  Rather than writing answers to a series of questions, a strategy that did not work very well when Sally tried it, it might be fun to verbally share with each other highlights our personal aviation history, projects, and triumphs.  Perhaps we can try this at some of our future meetings, and the resulting mini-biographies will be shared in subsequent newsletters as member profiles.

Ninety Nines News:
At the next International Conference, two International Directors and Trustees for the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum, Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fund, Endowment Fund, and Museum of Women Pilots will be elected.  Anyone wishing to be a candidate for any of the above position must file an Intent to Seek Election Form by October 31, 2012.  Forms are available in the Library in the Members Area of the Ninety-Nines website:  www.ninety-nines.org.

Nominations are now open for the Ninety Nines Award of Achievement for Contributions to the Ninety-Nines, for Contributions to Aviation, and for Humanitarian Efforts and for the Award of Merit for non-Ninety Nines and for the George Palmer Putnam Award for non-Ninety Nines.  Any Ninety-Nines Chapter, Section or Trust can submit a nomination by January 15, 2013.  Submit a one-page letter signed by two officers or trustees including the name, address, and telephone number of the nominee or next-of-kin, if the nominee is deceased.  Up to three additional pages of substantiating material may be attached to the letter, which should be sent to International Headquarters in Oklahoma City to the attention of the Awards Committee.

If any of our members are interested in applying for 2013 Amelia Earhart Scholarships, the Vicki Cruse Memorial Scholarship for Emergency Maneuver Training, or the New Pilot Award, applications must be received by the Chapter by December 1, and by the Section AE Scholarship Chairman by December 15.  Further details are available at www.ninety-nines.org/index/cfm/scholarships.htm

Member News:   As many of you already know, Jan Pocock passed away on Tuesday, October 2   She had been ill for approximately one year prior to her death.  Jan joined the Ninety Nines in 1964 soon after earning her pilot’s license at Arrowhead Airport.  She was a Life Member of the Ninety Nines, past chairman of our Chapter, and long-time Chapter scholarship chairman, administering the Del Scharr Scholarship and helping Chapter members win Amelia Earhart Scholarships from the International organization.  Jan was also a Life Member of the Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum and a long-time member of its Board of Directors.  She was a member of the Gateway Chapter of Missouri Pilots Association.  Several members of Jan’s family were pilots, and she became determined to earn her pilot’s license early in her tenure as a flight dispatcher for Monsanto Corp., a position she held until her retirement in 1985.  Ruth Bohnert, Gussie Freese, Sue Mathias, Jean Murry, Vivian Waters, and Libby Yunger attended Jan’s memorial service at Schrader Funeral Home on Thursday, October 11.  Libby will be preparing a New Horizons article for the 99 News and would like to borrow a flattering black and white or color photograph of Jan that can be scanned for use in the article.  The photo need not be recent, but it needs to be in reasonably good condition.

We are sorry to report that Martha Norman’s sister died of a blood clot following surgery.  Martha is with her sister’s family in Texas and will most likely miss the Chapter Birthday Party.  Her sister had been working on a cookbook that Martha plans to complete as a memorial.  Our Chapter sends its heart-felt condolences to Martha.
If you haven’t yet looked in the September/October issue of 99 News, there is an article on Jean Murry and Delia Greer receiving the Award of Achievement for Humanitarian Efforts on p. 11 and a New Horizons article on Delia on p. 30.

If you know of internship opportunities in education or hospitality, Susan Van Matre would like to hear from you as she completes her for a M.Ed. in Adult and Higher Education Management.  She is looking for internships at colleges or other fun and interesting places in the area for next Spring.  You can contact Susan at slvanmatre@gmail.com .
