AVIATION NEWS:
After February 1, 2009, distress signals emitted by 121.5 Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs) will no longer be monitored by the International Cospas-Sarsat Agency. The satellites will process only signals from 406 MHz ELT transmitters. 121.5 may still be monitored by overflying aircraft and will be monitored by ground stations, such as the CAP. However, this may be of limited value in sparsely populated areas. Therefore the FAA recommends that aircraft owners retrofit their aircraft with 406 MHz ELTs or carry a handheld 406 MHz personal locator beacon. For additional information about this change see: www.sarsat.noaa.gov
MEMBER NEWS
We received the attached picture from Kim Atkins in Italy. Looks like she’s enjoying life in Aviano – though the way most Italians drive I’d be very careful on a motorcycle. Her daughter Samantha was visiting Prague when she wrote. Her address is now: PSC 103 Box 1301, APO, AE 09603-0014 and her e-mail address is still firefighter106ofd@yahoo.com
For those of you who want to keep up with the comings and goings of Sally Siebe as she pursues her Instrument rating, she has a web site at http://seesallyfly.blogspot.com/ I learned instruments without GPS or DME – never had to fly a DME arc!
