Minutes of the meeting of Saturday, November 15, 2008
at the Mid-County Library, Clayton, MO

Present at the meeting: Gussie Freese, Ruby Fudoli, Delia Greer, Sue Mathias, Jean Murry, Jan Pocock, Sally Siebe, Libby Yunger.

The meeting was called to order at 1:35 pm by Chairman Sally Siebe. The minutes were accepted as corrected (the headquarters hotel for the 2009 International convention in Chicago is the downtown Marriott, not the Drake). Gussie Freese reported that per Martha Norman, there were no income or disbursements from our treasury.

Sally Siebe announced that the Chairman?s manual is now available as a down-loadable pdf file on the International web site.

Upcoming meetings:
December 20, 2008: Christmas lunch at 11:30 am at the Blue Owl Restaurant in Kimmswick
January 17, 2009: We will have a table and will hold our regular business meeting at the Midwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show at the Maryland Hts. Community Center.
February, 2009: Jean Murry will try to arrange a tour of the new control tower at Downtown Airport.
There are no plans yet for the March and April meetings.
Libby Yunger will contact Greenville Airport sometime next spring to see if they still want a compass rose painted on their new ramp.

The upcoming schedule for the library exhibit was discussed and clarified. Jan Pocock and Jean Murry will set up the display in December 2008.

The St. Louis County Library charges non-profit organizations $10 for use of a meeting room. Gussie Freese moved that Libby Yunger be reimbursed from the treasury, Jan Pocock seconded, and the motion was unanimously approved.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:05 am.

Following the business meeting, Libby Yunger gave a slide presentation on her adventures at the Reno Air Races with the Rare Bear and Zipper Air Race Teams.

From 2002-2004 Libby Yunger was a fan sponsor of Rare Bear, a highly modified Grumman F8F Bearcat, that for many year held the course speed record at the Reno Air Races and still holds the Closed Course World Speed Record for propeller driven aircraftand the 3000 meter Time-to-Climb Record.. During the past two years she has tagged along with George Andre’s Zipper Air Race Team at Reno. In 2007 George came in second in the Formula One Gold Race and this year he won the Biplane Silver Race at Reno. Libby will relate some of her experiences hanging around the pits at the Reno Air Races.

The Mid-County Library is in downtown Clayton on the northeast corner of Maryland Ave and Central Ave.
If you’re coming from the west, take your favorite route to I-270. Get off of I-270 at Ladue Rd. Go east on Ladue Rd for several miles – Ladue Rd becomes Maryland Ave when it enters Clayton just east of I-170. The Library will be on the left hand side of the street (I think it’s the 8th stop light east of the first I-170 exit). If you are coming from the north or from Illinois north of I-70, take I-270 to I-170 south. Exit I-170 at Ladue Rd. Go east on Ladue Rd (it becomes Maryland Ave) about 8 lights. The library is on the left. If you are coming from the Air Force base area or from the south, take your favorite route to I-64/US40 west. Go on I-64 all the way to it’s current end where it will merge into I-170 north. Exit at Ladue Rd – that’s the second exit on I-170 so stay to the right side of the highway.

There is parking under the library – the entrance is off Maryland Ave just east of the library building. However, the folks at the library have asked that we park on the street if possible. There is free parking on Central and on Bemiston north of the library. There are parking meters on the street and in the lot on the northwest corner of Maryland and Central.

Skyline Aeronautics

Mike Gaffney sent the following announcement out :
TO OUR FRIENDS AND CREDITORS:
I am truly sad to report that after 6 and one half years, Skyline Aeronautics, Skyline Aeronautics Pilot Store, Skyline Aeronautics Maintenance, and Skyline Aeronautics Flight have all been forced to close their doors. Steadily rising costs over the past few years, coupled with the dramatic drop in disposable income this year caused by the current economic conditions and other factors, have reduced demand for the quality services that we provide. These factors have created a situation which has left us no choice but to close our doors for good.
Our bank creditor has moved to secure its liens on our building, accounts, equipment and all other assets, so there is no remaining money with which to pay out even a portion of what the company owes.
Starting Monday, the Pilot Store at 521 Spirit of St. Louis Blvd will be the site for a bank supervised “Going Out Of Business Clearance sale” for the next week to clear out remaining bank owned store and flight line inventory, computers, office equipment and fixtures. All sales are final. Cash or approved checks only.
I truly regret these circumstances and wish that the situation had turned out differently.

Ninety-Nines Awards:

The 99s give three awards at our annual conference. The Award of Achievement is presented to a 99 (or a group within the 99s, such as a chapter, section, Trust, etc.) in recognition of contributions made to The 99s or to aviation in general (such as aviation history, education, science, exploration, etc.). The other two awards are presented to "non-99s." The first one, the George Palmer Putnam Award, is given in recognition of support of The 99s. The other award, the Award of Merit, is given to recognize a contribution(s) made to aviation in general. Each of these awards may be presented to an individual or an organization. Individual winners may be male or female. Recipients may be living or deceased and from any country. The contribution may have occurred at any time in the past or present, as a single action or a series of events.

The nominating requirements are very simple:
A. Nominations may be submitted by any individual or group within The Ninety-Nines.
B. The nomination should be in the form of a one-page letter and up to three additional pages of substantiating material. The name, address and phone number of the nominee or the nominee's next of kin, if the nominee is deceased, should be included.
C. The nomination should give complete, but concise, details justifying the award to the nominee with such background information as considered pertinent, and any other relevant information, that would assist the Awards Committee.
D. Nominations from previous years may be resubmitted.
E. Nominations should be sent to The Ninety-Nines Headquarters to the attention of the Awards Committee.
F. Nominations may be submitted by electronic transmission (fax or email) or by post. The nomination must be received on or before January 15, 2009.
