We have arranged a private tour of Lambert Airport with the new director, Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. Rhonda will share her journey in the aviation industry, discuss plans for Lambert, and give us a glimpse of operations "behind the scenes." Portions of the tour will be on a 26 seat bus.

10 am - meet at the office of tour guide, Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, Airport Director.

* Park in Garage #1 - adjacent to main terminal (Terminal 1)
* Get parking ticket
* Enter through baggage claim area and go up ramp
* Keep straight and continue past entrances to Concourse A and USO

Future Chapter Events:
Holiday/Christmas Luncheon: Our Holiday/Christmas luncheon will be held on Saturday, 11 December at the Mother-in-Law House Restaurant on Main Street, St. Charles. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Main Street is always alive with carolers, musicians, carriage rides and Dickensian pageantry. There are many unique shops, making it a great place to look for unusual Christmas gifts. At the luncheon we will be collecting non-perishable food and household items for the Circle of Concern food pantry. We will also be collecting small goodies for our raffle basket at the MACTS in January.

Girl Scout Event: Our chapter will be hosting a program for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri on Saturday, 19 March from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at Wings of Hope. There will between 20-40 girls in grades 6-12 (ages 11-18). Please reserve this date for the Girl Scout program, since we will need everyone’s commitment to do this properly. If you would like to work on this event, please plan to stay after lunch on Saturday 13 November for a brief planning meeting.

Midwest Conference and Trade Show (MACTS) and Flight Instructors Revalidation Clinic will be held on Saturday-Sunday, 15-16 January 2011. The Super Safety Seminar is on Saturday morning, 15 January and the awards banquet will be that evening. Speakers include Erik Lindberg, commercial pilot and flight instructor, Rod Hightower, President/CEO of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and Ralph Hood, Commercial Pilot and Aviation Humorist. We will again have a booth on Saturday at this event and will be raffling off goodie baskets.

Future Aviation Events:
AIRCRAFT MUST RE-REGISTER - If Issued Registration Before October 1, 2010. The Re-Registration and Renewal of Aircraft Registration rule went into effect on October 1, 2010. Aircraft registrations issued on or after this date will expire after three years when they may be renewed. Aircraft registered before October 1, 2010, are required to re-register during the next three years according to the schedule provided in 14 CFR Part 47.40. Reminder notices will be sent using the address of record, make sure your address is up to date. The first group of aircraft to be re-registered will be aircraft that have a current registration issue date during the month of March, from all years. Application for re-registration of these aircraft should be made between November 1, 2010, and January 31, 2011. Making an early application will ensure the new certificate of registration can be delivered before the old certificate expires on March 31, 2011. Questions may be directed toll free to 866-762-9434. Present: Ruth Bohnert (tour and meeting only), Gussie Freese (lunch only), Delia Greer, Mary Kinnaw, Sherry Lemaster (tour and meeting only), Sue Mathias, Jean Murry, Jan Pocock (lunch only), Susan Van Matre, Vivian Waters (lunch only), and Libby Yunger.

The meeting followed lunch at the Wine Country Garden Restaurant in Defiance and a tour of the St. Louis TRACON in Weldon Sprints.

The meeting was called to order at 3:15 pm by our Chairman, Jean Murry.

We had no meeting in September so there were no minutes. There was no treasurer’s report

Old Business:
Libby Yunger updated the group on the Girl Scout event that is scheduled for Saturday, 19 March 2011 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at Wings of Hope. Member Sabrina Zwego is a faculty member at SIU-Carbonhdale and a certified ground instructor. She will be able to provide four flight simulators for the event, as well as the help of the WAI chapter at SIU-Carbondale. Jean Murry said the Wings of Hope hangar will be available for the event. Delia Greer will have the MATS plane open and will talk about the role of the flight nurse in transporting medical patients. We will have a short planning meeting for the Girl Scout event following the Lambert tour and luncheon on 13 November. The Holiday Luncheon will be on Saturday, 11 December at the Mother-in-Law House restaurant on Old Capitol in historic downtown St. Charles. Members are asked to bring non-perishable food and other items to donate to the Circle of Concern. We will also collect additional items for our raffle basket for the MACTS at that time.

There was no New Business.

If you did not sign up for the TRACON tour by 30 September, you will not be able to attend. Please remember to bring an official picture ID that is required by the FAA to enter the TRACON. Wine Country Gardens is located on at 2711 S. Highway 94 in Defiance. If you are coming from the north on I-270 take the Page Avenue Extension into St. Charles. That merges with Hwy 94 west (toward Weldon Springs). If you are coming from the south or east take I-64 to the Hwy 94 exit and turn left (southwest) at the light at the bottom of the exit ramp. Follow Hwy 94 west past the Weldon Springs Conservation area. Wine Country Gardens is on the right just before you get to the city of Defiance. If you are not going to lunch, meet the lunch group at the TRACON at 1:45 pm. The St. Louis TRACON is in the Missouri Research Park in St. Charles. Take I-64 west and exit at Hwy 94. Turn left at the bottom of the exit ramp, cross over I-64 and turn left at Research Park Drive. The building is on the left but back from the road and easy to miss, so watch the signage. Its address is 14 Research Park Dr.

Notes from September
There was no meeting in September. Only five members (Jean Murry, Susan Van Matre, Gussie Freese, Delia Greer, and Jan Pocock) attended the tour of St. Louis University and the Parks College Campus on 11 September. However, those who went were very enthusiastic about the event. Tour guide, Susan Bloomfield, was knowledgeable and entertaining. Everyone could ride in the golf cart so walking was not a problem. It was suggested that we schedule another Parks College tour at a future date when more members will be available to attend.

Future Chapter Events:
November meeting: Our tour of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is scheduled for Saturday, 13 November, with Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, Airport Director. We will meet at Rhonda's office at 10 am for a behind the scenes tour of the airfield, baggage hangar, and underground operations. We'll be in a passenger van for a portion of the tour and must limit the group to 28 members and guests. At 11:30 am, following the tour, Rhonda will be our lunch guest at the Missouri Vineyard restaurant on the field. Parking will be free, with details to follow as the date draws nearer. We need a confirmed headcount by 2 November, anyone wanting to attend contact Susan Van Matre at slvanmatre@gmail.com.

I sent the following program description to Michelle Johnson, Girl Scout Program Manager: The syllabus would include the principles of flight (the concepts of lift, gravity, thrust, and drag), how an aircraft becomes and remains airborne. We would show the girls how aircraft controls change the configuration of the aircraft and allow the aircraft to take off and land. We could also discuss a little about navigation - when you're in the air above the clouds, how do you know where you are. We could also discuss a little about communication - who a pilots needs to speak with prior to departure, during departure, en route, and prior to and during landing. The girls would get to see airplanes and their controls and instrumentation but they would not actually get into the aircraft (we could arrange stools so that the girls can see into the cockpit fairly readily and safely).

Member News:
Teresa Camp, Sue Mathias, and Susan Van Matre attended Monika Petrillo’s film Flyabout at Boeing on 24 September and the pre-show dinner with Monika at Pi Pizzeria. Sue’s friend, Marcia Maroe Connaghan (who is a long-time pilot-wannabe) was so impressed by Monika and her journey that she wrote a review for the St. Louis Small Business Examiner. Monika said it was the first time she had ever been interviewed as a "businesswoman". Several of our members vacationed in September or early October. Jean Murry toured Egypt with her sister. Libby Yunger and Bob Kraemer were at the Reno Air Races helping out with George André’s Zipper Air Racing Team. George and Zipper II placed 6th in the Biplane Gold Race. Delia Greer went to Albuquerque for the International Balloon Fiesta.
Vivian Waters’ photographs from her recent Arizona trip continue on exhibit at the Art Saint Louis Gallery Show, Room with a View. The exhibit goes through October 21. Our West Coast friend, Amy Laws, visited St. Louis in September for a grandchild’s wedding. While here she had lunch with several of her Ninety Nines friends on 7 September. A photo of Amy is appended to this Newsletter.

We will meet at McDonnell-Douglas Hall, 3450 Lindell Blvd. at 10:30 am. Our tour guide will be Susan Bloomfield, a 1975 Parks College graduate and current SLU employee. Golf cart transportation will be provided for those who are unable to do the walking portion of the tour. Parking: Park in garage at Compton-Olive. If gate isn't open to allow free parking, free parking coupons will be provided during tour. Parking garage is directly east of McDonnell-Douglas Hall. The restaurant is three blocks from the parking garage.

Other September Events:
We have been invited by the Women with Wings Chapter of WAI to attend the showing of Flyabout at the Boeing Auditorium on Friday, 24 September at 6:00 pm. You may bring guests to this event. Enter through the Prologue Room entrance. The Prologue Room opens at 5 pm. Admission is free but the WWW are accepting donations to help pay for Monika Petrillo’s airfare from California to St. Louis. Flyabout documents Monika’s flight with her father in a Cessna 172 around the periphery of Australia. Monika will answer questions following the movie. Additional information about this event is attached in a separate file.

September 11-12 – Air Power over the Midwest air show and open house at Scott Air Force Base featuring the Blue Angels. Gates are open from 9 am to 5 pm both days. If you have a chance to attend, stop by the Soaring Society booth and say hello to Anne Mongiovi.

September 17-18 – Great Forest Park Balloon Race in Central Field near the Jewel Box in Forest Park. Balloon glow is Friday evening, September 17, from 7:00-8:30 pm, and the race is scheduled for Saturday, September 18. Events begin at noon and the race begins at 4:30 pm. Rain date for the race is Sunday, September 19. All events and parking are free.

September 18 – CAF Hangar Dance at their hangar at St. Charles County (Smartt) Airport (KSET) from 6:00-10:00 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.

September 25-26 – St. Charles County Airport (Smartt Field) Open House, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day.

Chapter News:
Michelle Johnson, Program Manager of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, would like us to present a program to the Girl Scouts sometime between February-May, 2011. They are currently working on their schedule and we need to get back to them with plans for the event as soon as possible. Perhaps we could do an introduction to flight next March at Wings of Hope.

Member News
Vivian Waters will have three photographs from her recent Arizona trip on exhibit at the Art Saint Louis Gallery Show, Room with a View. The exhibit runs from September 13 through October 21. The opening reception will be on Saturday, September 25, from 6-8 pm. Vivian will be present at a Meet the Artist event on Saturday, September 18 from 1-4 pm. Minutes of the Meeting of the Greater St. Louis Ninety Nines

Present: Ruth Bohnert, Audrey Casper, Gussie Freese, Delia Greer, Mary Kinnaw, Sue Mathias, Jean Murry, Martha Norman, Jan Pocock, Sally Siebe, Susan Van Matre, Vivian Waters, and Libby Yunger

The meeting followed our Chapter Birthday Party during lunch at Creve Coeur airport. We noshed on hamburgers or turkey “filet mignon” with condiments, stir fried vegetables, and potato salad topped off by a fabulous sheet cake from McArthur Bakery that was donated by Jan Pocock. Martha Norman and Jean Murry brought photos of past Chapter events. It was fun to visit and reminisce.

The meeting was called to order at 1:30 pm by our Chairman, Jean Murry. We had no meeting in July so there were no minutes. Martha Norman presented the treasurer’s report. Jean Murry reported that we had received a thank you note from the Wings of Hope for our $150 donation in support of Teresa Camp and Beverly Cleair in the Air Race Classic. Jan Pocock was thanked for bringing the cake.
Gussie Freese reported that our library display is on vacation this month but will be in the Lewis and Clark Library in September.

Old Business:

Susan Van Matre clarified arrangements for our tour of the Saint Louis University (SLU) and Parks College Campus on Saturday, 11 September. There is no limit to the number of attendees but the golf cart that will be available for anyone who is unable to walk the entire distance of the tour will only accommodate 6 people. There will be a tour of SLU from 10:30 – 11:30 am and a tour of the new Parks College campus from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm. This will be followed by lunch at 1 pm at The Fountain on Locust. The parking arrangements and assembly point will be announced in the September Newsletter.

The October meeting will be a tour of the TRACON in Weldon Springs followed by lunch at one of the wineries on Rte 94. Once Ruth Bohnert’s son knows his work schedule, the date will be set and Vivian Waters will make reservations for us at the Winery.

The Lambert Airport Tour is scheduled for 13 November.

The Holiday Luncheon will be on Saturday, 11 December at the Mother-in-Law House restaurant on Old Capitol in historic downtown St. Charles. The group decided that we would order from the menu.

Our January meeting will be at the Midwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show. We will again be raffling a goodie basket. Libby Yunger has donated a basket, bottle of wine and salsa. Jean Murry asked the Chapter members to donate other items for the basket.

Martha Norman announced that the Chapter Handbook would be distributed in September.

Since attendance has improved for the first three meetings this year, the group decided to continue calling members each month to remind them of the meeting date, time, and place.

New Business:

The Women with Wings Chapter of WAI asked our Chapter to join them at the Boeing Theater for the showing of Flyabout – an autobiographical documentary by Monika Petrillo about her flight around Australia with her father in a single engine aircraft. The Boeing Prologue Room opens at 5 pm, the film is at 6 pm, and there will be a Q&A session with Monika Petrillo following the film. Enter the Boeing Theater through the Prologue Room.

We discussed future program ideas. 1) Jean Murry suggested that we view the movie Pearl - a biography of Eula “Pearl” Carter Scott. She was the daughter of a wealthy Oklahoma oilman his wife, a Chickasaw Indian. With the encouragement of her father’s friend, Wiley Post, Pearl obtained a pilot’s license at age 14 in 1928. She is the youngest women and the first female Native American to obtain a pilot’s license. This movie was shown at Oshkosh this year but is very low budget and is unlikely to have wide distribution in theaters. 2) Libby Yunger suggested that Susan Van Matre contact Anne Mongiovi to see if she would be willing to arrange for us to fly the sailplanes at Highland-Wynet Airport.

The fall meeting of the North Central Section will be a joint meeting with the Southeast Section in Nashville, TN, on 1-3 October 2010. Jan Pocock is planning to attend and would appreciate if someone from the chapter would share travel and lodging expenses with her.

August meeting: Chapter Birthday Party

Note that lunch at Creve Coeur is now $6 – but the food is always excellent and well worth the modest cost. If you haven’t driven to Creve Coeur airport lately, the easiest way to get there is to take I-270 and exit at the Page Ave Extension (MO-364) west. Exit MO-364 at Maryland Hts Expressway. Go north (right) on Maryland Hts Expressway approximately 1 mile to Creve Coeur Mill Rd. Turn left at Creve Coeur Mill Rd and follow it into the airport parking lot. We hope many of you will come by and wish our Chapter a Happy Birthday.

July Event:
There was no business meeting in July, therefore there will be no minutes. However, 23 members and guests attended Patrice Mullins presentation on her career as St. Louis County police officer and Chief helicopter pilot. In addition to Patrice, chapter members in attendance were Sarah Arnac, Teresa Camp, Delia Greer, Mary Kinnaw, Sue Mathias, Patrice Mullins, Jean Murry, Martha Norman, Jan Pocock, Susan Van Matre, and Libby Yunger. We had several guests from the Women with Wings chapter of WAI and from St. Charles Zonta, of which Patrice is a past president. Patrice’s presentation took the form of an interview moderated by Nanette Malher, followed by questions from the audience. Patrice related highlights of her life from 5-year-old B-B gun marksman through several changes in her college major to a post-college desk job to the police academy. She told of many of her more harrowing or interesting experiences as a police officer and later in the police helicopter unit and as a sniper on the SWAT team. Her goal was always to be the best police officer that she could be. Moderator Nanette Malher is a Ninety Nine from Nashville TN where she owns Aviatrix Enterprises (www.aviatrixenterprises.com). She was in town to garner support for a documentary she is producing on the life and times of Bobbi Trout, entitled “If I Reach” – The Bobbi Trout Story. Bobbi was a charter member of the Ninety Nines whom Nanette met when they both attended Amelia Earhart’s 90th birthday gathering in Atchison KS in 1987. Fifteen years later, when Bobbi was in her 90s, she asked Nanette to help her create a web site (www.bobbitrout.com) so that her memorabilia from the early years of women in aviation would not be lost. Nanette was also involved in the production of the recent documentary on the 1929 Women’s Air Derby entitled Breaking through the Clouds: The First Women’s National Air Derby. This air race was the first time the women pilots had worked together to do something on a national scale, and it became the impetus for the formation of the Ninety Nines (www.breakingthroughtheclouds.com).

Chapter News:
Please mark your calendars for our September meeting and tour of the St. Louis University and the new Parks College campus in midtown St. Louis on Saturday, 11 September. Susan Bloomfield of SLU will conduct the tour. Times are as follows: 10:30-11:30 am – campus tour of SLU, 11;30 am – 12:30 pm, tour of the Parks campus. SLU will provide a golf cart with seating for up to 6 people for anyone not wanting to walk the entire campus. Lunch at The Fountain on Locust will follow the tour. The Fountain has really great soups, salads, and sandwiches and, best of all, ice cream desserts. We hope many of our members will be able to attend.

Member News:
We were very happy that member Sarah Arnac could attend our July meeting. Sarah is an aeronautical engineering student at Purdue University in Indiana and is now dividing her time between classes in Indiana and her internship with NASA in California, with only occasional stops in the St. Louis area to visit family. She is planning to change her Ninety Nines affiliation to a chapter in California but she knows she is always welcome to visit the Greater St. Louis chapter when she is in the area.

One of Susan Van Matre’s guests at the July talk was Jennie Fosdick, flight instructor at Air Associates, the new flight school at Spirit of St. Louis Airport. Susan recently flew with Jennie – and, Susan, we hope that’s just a first step to flying PIC again. Another interesting note: Susan and Patrice got to talking at the luncheon and discovered that not only did they both grow up in the same North St. Louis County neighborhood but they were in first grade together. Now that’s a small world!

July meeting: Patrice Mullins, Presenter

Patrice Mullins, formerly Chief Pilot Mullins, knows a little something about S.W.E.A.Ttm as it relates to these success tips: Maintain a Sense of humor, Work hard, Encourage Enthusiasm, Adapt to any situation, and Trust your Team. After becoming the first female to graduate at the top of her class in the history of the Greater St. Louis Police Academy, and receiving recognition as First in Firearms, Patrice took her love of flying and aviation into a dream job as the first female police officer to become a helicopter pilot (in the United States for a law enforcement agency). At the tender age of 27 in 1984, she began to fly air patrol over the St. Louis metro region, now the nation’s largest geographical region in airborne law enforcement covering 1200 square miles.
Patrice was a member of the SWAT Team for 10 years and was an active part of responding to hostage crises, and other high-risk tactical situations.
Upon retiring after serving 28 years with the St Louis County Police Department, Patrice is bringing her hard-earned experience and wisdom to groups of all sizes by sharing stories of survival, of overcoming obstacles, and of re-inventing oneself.
Patrice’s transformational model called “Begin with a Destination in Mind” brings a blend of proven success principles to the workplace. Delia Greer and Jean Murry will be attending AirVenture 2010 in Oshkosh from 28 July to 1 August and will be working in the Ninety-Nines tent on Thursday, Friday,and Saturday. If you’ll be at AirVenture stop in to see them! Anne Mongiovi will also be attending AirVenture.

Libby Yunger is resuming many of her activities after her bilateral hip replacement in April. She is back flying (but not as PIC), being a Docent at the zoo, and she recently spoke on the History of the Ninety-Nines to the EAA Chapter at Jeff City. She also has a talk planned on the History of Women in Aviation to be presented to the Lake of the Ozarks Chapter of Missouri Pilots Association in September after she returns from the Reno Air Races.

Photographer Vivian Waters will have exhibits in a couple of gallery shows this month. She will have one work hanging in the Contemporary Art Museum’s Fifth Annual City Wide Open Studios. The preview reception is 20 July and the show runs through 30 July. The Museum is located at 3750 Washington Blvd., St. Louis MO 63108 in Grand Center. She will also have eight pieces hanging on 24 July at 2720 Cherokee St. in St. Louis.

Cathy Babis will miss our meeting this month because she is becoming SCUBA certified during that weekend. She also reports that there is a 50/50 chance that she will attend AirVenture this year on business.

“In 1927, a 21-year-old ignored the fact that she was a girl and became part of a new American industry that even grown men feared. Against all odds -- lack of money; a broken family; a father who was a compulsive gambler; the looming depression -- she did not consider herself “disadvantaged.” She brushed aside mainstream thought, cut off all her hair and donned men’s clothes to do what she loved to do the most -- fly airplanes. She never looked back. The public admiringly looked up. Bobbi Trout reached for the American Dream at a time when many Americans doubted it would ever exist again.”

Bobbi Trout was a pioneering and record-setting aviatrix during the late 1920s and early 1930s. Her friends and peers were the likes of Amelia Earhart, Walt Disney, and Will Rogers. She was a mentor to women in aviation throughout her 97 years on earth. Her story inspires young and old and must not be forgotten.
