July meeting: Patrice Mullins, Presenter

Patrice Mullins, formerly Chief Pilot Mullins, knows a little something about S.W.E.A.Ttm as it relates to these success tips: Maintain a Sense of humor, Work hard, Encourage Enthusiasm, Adapt to any situation, and Trust your Team. After becoming the first female to graduate at the top of her class in the history of the Greater St. Louis Police Academy, and receiving recognition as First in Firearms, Patrice took her love of flying and aviation into a dream job as the first female police officer to become a helicopter pilot (in the United States for a law enforcement agency). At the tender age of 27 in 1984, she began to fly air patrol over the St. Louis metro region, now the nation’s largest geographical region in airborne law enforcement covering 1200 square miles.
Patrice was a member of the SWAT Team for 10 years and was an active part of responding to hostage crises, and other high-risk tactical situations.
Upon retiring after serving 28 years with the St Louis County Police Department, Patrice is bringing her hard-earned experience and wisdom to groups of all sizes by sharing stories of survival, of overcoming obstacles, and of re-inventing oneself.
Patrice’s transformational model called “Begin with a Destination in Mind” brings a blend of proven success principles to the workplace. Please mark your calendars for our Chapter birthday party at noon on Sunday, 15 August, at Creve Coeur Airport. Lunch is $5. Many interesting planes are based at Creve Coeur and snooping around the hangars is like visiting an aviation museum. We hope to see many of our members at the party.

MEMBER NEWS

Delia Greer and Jean Murry will be attending AirVenture 2010 in Oshkosh from 28 July to 1 August and will be working in the Ninety-Nines tent on Thursday, Friday,and Saturday. If you’ll be at AirVenture stop in to see them! Anne Mongiovi will also be attending AirVenture.

Libby Yunger is resuming many of her activities after her bilateral hip replacement in April. She is back flying (but not as PIC), being a Docent at the zoo, and she recently spoke on the History of the Ninety-Nines to the EAA Chapter at Jeff City. She also has a talk planned on the History of Women in Aviation to be presented to the Lake of the Ozarks Chapter of Missouri Pilots Association in September after she returns from the Reno Air Races.

Photographer Vivian Waters will have exhibits in a couple of gallery shows this month. She will have one work hanging in the Contemporary Art Museum’s Fifth Annual City Wide Open Studios. The preview reception is 20 July and the show runs through 30 July. The Museum is located at 3750 Washington Blvd., St. Louis MO 63108 in Grand Center. She will also have eight pieces hanging on 24 July at 2720 Cherokee St. in St. Louis.

Cathy Babis will miss our meeting this month because she is becoming SCUBA certified during that weekend. She also reports that there is a 50/50 chance that she will attend AirVenture this year on business.

Bobbi Trout was a pioneering and record-setting aviatrix during the late 1920s and early 1930s. Her friends and peers were the likes of Amelia Earhart, Walt Disney, and Will Rogers. She was a mentor to women in aviation throughout her 97 years on earth. Her story inspires young and old and must not be forgotten.

Minutes of the Meeting of the Greater St. Louis Ninety Nines
Saturday, 19 June 2010

Present: Ruth Bohnert, Gussie Freese, Ruby Fudoli, Delia Greer, Mary Kinnaw, Jean Murry, Jan Pocock, Susan Van Matre, Vivian Waters, and Libby Yunger

The meeting was called to order at 12:30 pm by chairman, Jean Murry. Our previous event was the Installation luncheon and there were no minutes. Libby Yunger read the Treasurer's Report received from Martha Norman and it was accepted as read. Martha and Libby will audit the treasurer's books sometime before the end of June.

Susan Van Matre led the discussion of the programs for the 2010-2011. The following programs have been finalized:

July 24, 2010 - Patrice Mullins will present her experiences as a helicopter pilot with the St. Louis County Police at 11 am at Wings of Hope. Lunch at a restaurant in the Chesterfield Valley will follow. The Women with Wings will be invited to this presentation

August 15, 2010 - Lunch at noon at Creve Coeur Airport

September 11, 2010 – Tour of the Parks College Campus in Mid-town. Lunch to follow at Fountain on Locust. Time to be announced

October - date and time to be announced - Tour of the St. Louis TRACON. Women with Wings will be invited to join us. Lunch afterward at a winery.

November 13, 2010, Tour of St. Louis Lambert International Airport with the new director, Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. Lunch afterward at The Vineyards. The tour group will be limited to 20 and reservations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

December 2010 - place, date, and time to be determined - Holiday Luncheon

January 2011 - date to be determined - Table at the Midwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show (MACTS) at the Maryland Hts. Community Center.

February 19, 2011 - Compass Rose discussion at Wings of Hope with the Women With Wings at 11 am.

March 2011 - Date and time to be determined. Assist Women with Wings paint a compass rose at Washington Airport

April 2011 - Program to be determined

May 21, 2011 - Place and time to be determined - Installation Luncheon

New Business:
Ideas were discussed to encourage meeting attendance. 1) Several volunteers will call members in the week prior to each meeting to encourage them to attend. 2) Members will be encouraged to bring a non-member pilot or student pilot to our meetings. 3) We will ask Rhonda Hamm-Niebreugge to arrange a newspaper story of our tour of Lambert Airport. 4) Members should check our website on a regular basis and request that Laura Million (our web master) remove old information is removed or submit news items or photos of our events for our website.
Libby Yunger moved and Mary Kinnaw seconded that we donate $150 to the Wings of Hope in support of Teresa Camp and Beverly Cleair if they participate in the Air Race Classis. The motion passed.

We discussed the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri request that we present a science/aviation program at their day camp for grades 6-12 at Florissant Valley Community College during the week of 12-16 July. We do not have a suitable off-airport program and will decline the request.

Jean Murry announced that our proxy votes for the International Conference in Hawaii have been given to Rita Adams of the Chicago Chapter.

Mary Kinnaw was named Corresponding Secretary and will write thank you letters to our invited speakers.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:50 pm.

July Meeting

Saturday, 19 June from 11 am to 5 pm - Potluck lunch and pool party at the Chapter One Clubhouse hosted by Vivian Waters. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish to share. Lunch will be at 11:30 am and the meeting will follow at about 1 pm.
Directions to Chapter One coming from the east , take I-270 or Mo - 141 to US 40(I-64) west to across the Missouri River into St Charles County to exit 10 (MO 94) toward St. Charles. Turn right at the exit ramp and go approximately 0.5 mi to Siedentop Rd (first light). Turn left on Siedentop and continue to Hemingway Lane (Hemmingway bears left to the clubhouse.)
This meeting is always a lot of fun and we hope to see many of our members on Saturday!

New Officers:
The officers for 2010-2011 are: Chairman – Jean Murry; Vice Chairman – Susan Van Matre, Secretary – Libby Yunger, Treasurer – Martha Norman, and Directors – Delia Greer, Sue Mathias, Jan Pocock, and Vivian Waters.

Meeting Agenda
2010 Meetings: The Board of Directors met on Sunday, 6 June and discussed several ideas for upcoming meetings. The following meetings were finalized:
Sunday, 17, July: Lunch at Creve Coeur Airport – Jean Murry, host
Saturday, 11 or 18 December: Holiday Luncheon – Susan Van Matre, host
Saturday, ? January: Table at MACTS – Libby Yunger, host
Saturday, 21 May: Installation Luncheon, Susan Van Matre, host

The Women with Wings Chapter of WAI are planning to paint a compass rose at Washington Airport in March 2011. The decision was made that the Women with Wings would lead project but that we would help them. The Ninety-Nines logo would not be used.
Other programs that are being pursued are:

1. Patrice Mullins to discuss her experiences as a St. Louis County Police helicopter pilot. This would be presented at Wings of Hope and the Women With Wings would be invited to attend
2. Tour of Parks College
3. Tour of the St. Louis TRACON in St. Charles followed by a winery visit.
4. Tour of Lambert Airport with the new director followed by lunch at her wine restaurant
5. Compass Rose pre-party in February at the Wings of Hope with the Women with Wings
   

Girl Scout Event: Libby Yunger has had discussions with Michelle Johnson, Program Director of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri. She would like us to present a science/aviation related activity at their day camp for grades 6-12 that will be held at Florissant Valley Community College the week of 12-16 July. Ideas and volunteers for this program would be greatly appreciated. Please bring these ideas to the meeting on Saturday or e-mail them to Libby at girlpilot@sbcglobal.net

1. Teresa Camp and Beverly Cleair will be flying in the Air Race Classic, 22-25 June, to raise money for the Wings of Hope. Blue skies and tailwinds, Teresa and Beverly! Del Scharr Scholarship
Kristie Leinecki is our Del Scharr Scholarship winner this year. She just completed her senior year in Commercial Aviation at the University of North Dakota – Grand Forks but will be continuing on for post-graduate training this autumn. At the time she applied, she had 320 flight hours and was working on her CFI rating. She is originally from Hawaii, so North Dakota must be quite a change for her. We wish her success in her future endeavors.

Newsletter - May 2010

The Compass Rose Project was a huge success! We had our own engineer, Teresa Camp who directed the whole process and along with Susan Van Matre planned everything perfectly. Mother Nature gave us the best weather on Sunday and everything was accomplished in one day. Since Teresa is also a member of the St. Louis Women In Aviation, many of them came to help us in this project. The barbeque lunch provided by the Greenville Airport Staff was excellent and kept everyone working all day! We must thank everyone who helped us to make this such a great experience and success.

Our Installation Luncheon is planned for Saturday, May 22 at 12:00PM at Walpango Restaurant in the Chesterfield Mall. Please make your reservations by May 14 to Jan Pocock, 636-394-5734. Please call her because we need to know a count of persons expected.

Newsletter - March 2010

Hello everyone: With Mother Nature’s strange weather conditions last month, we decided to just skip the meeting and plan to have a good one in March. We want to see everyone there so we can celebrate the new Spring Season together.

The meeting will be held Sunday March 21st at Jean Murry's home, 33 Oakland Hills Drive in Chesterfield at 1PM. We're hoping for a beautiful day so we can have a pot luck picnic on her porch.

Sandwich meat, bread and the usual sandwich spreads will be furnished.

Please let Jean know if you will be coming and what you plan to bring so we have a good variety of other goodies. Her phone number is 314-469-3541.

Directions to Jean's House. If you're coming from the south take MO Rte 141 north and that becomes Woods Mill Rd. Take it almost to the northern end at Olive Street (if you get to Olive you've gone too far). About 2.5 miles north of the I-64 (US 40) interchange on the left is a sign for Four Seasons. Turn left onto Broadmoor Dr. Take the first left onto Oakland Hills Dr. You will pass the golf course on the right then Jean's is the fifth house on the right after the golf course.

Other Upcoming Events:

We will be painting a compass rose at Greenville IL airport on 1-2 May 2010. The rain date is 15-16 May.

Nelda Lee and Teresa Camp are in charge of this project so please contact them if you have supplies or plan to help. We will be discussing plans for the compass rose project at our March meeting.
We will also be discussing other projects, so come along with your ideas and enjoy the day with everyone.

Meeting Minutes - December 2009

Minutes December 13, 2009

Members Present: Jean Murry, Jan Pocock, Vivian Waters, Gussie Freese, Liby Yunger, Delia Greer, Sue Mathias, Mary Kinnaw, Nelda Lee, Martha Norman and Teresa Camp. Visitors: Chris Zern, Susan Van Matre, Jack Kinnaw, Bob Kremer and Bill Camp.

The meeting was called to order by Chairman, Libby Yunger at 1:35 PM following a Christmas Luncheon planned by Delia Greer at "Jimmy's On The Park" in Clayton MO.

Libby introduced our visitors and prospective members and asked each to give a little information about themselves and tell something about their flying experience.

MINUTES: the minutes from the Library meeting were not available and will be read at the next meeting. Libby discussed her talk about "99 Years of Women In Aviation” and “The History Of The Ninety Nines". She is available to give these talks and will be speaking at the EAA Christmas Party.

TREASURER'S REPORT: Treasurer, Martha Norman reported there are no changes since the last meeting. She reported there is one application for our scholarship so far this year.

OLD BUSINESS: Libby said she will not be available for meetings on Saturdays for awhile and the motion was made to plan our meetings on Sunday afternoons as needed by Mary Kinnaw and seconded by Jan Pocock and carried.. Jean will be in charge of our table at the Midwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show in January 2010 and we will have a meeting also at that time. Our February, 2010 meeting will be at Creve Coeur Airport on the 21st. We will meet at 12 noon for lunch and the meeting will follow. The painting of the compass rose is planned for May 1, 2010 at Greenville Airport. Jean Murry volunteered to chair that project.

NEW BUSINESS: Libby asked that we have library displays planned for February, July and August 2010. We will need to have a display in January at New Ballas and Indian Trails. She suggested we try some of the girls high schools librarys in the area for displays. Since there was no further business, the motion to adjourn was made by Sue Mathias and seconded by Delia Greer and carried.

The meeting adjourned at 2:15 PM.

Newsletter - November 2009

November 10, 2009

Our November meeting will be in the East Room of the St. Louis County Library Headquarters in Ladue. The date is Saturday November 14 at 11AM. Our program is "99 Years of women in Aviation, 1910-2009" This will be presented by our Chairman, Libby Yunger. Libby has given this program at different libraries and if you haven't herd it, be sure to come for this meeting. If you have heard it come anyway. We want to see you!

Does anyone know which Greater St. Louis Ninety-Nines have been inducted into the Forest of Friendship besides Del Scharr, Nelda Lee, and Dorothy Spangler? Be sure to let Libby know. There are more and we need to list them.

We who attended the preview showing of “Amelia" at the Bluffs had a very special experience. Greater St. Louis Chapter had a special reserved section which we managed to fill and the movie was spectacular! Several gals had dinner at a restaurant in the Bluffs before the movie. It was a special time for us. Nelda reported she brought a former member of our chapter, Peggy Bert who now lives in Sandy, Utah and also in Carlsbad, California. She no longer flies, but still loves aviation Her son is a captain with UPS.
It was good to see her again.

This is a report sent by Martha Norman about the NIFA competition where she was a judge. Thanks Martha!

We left Tuesday (October 20) for Romeoville, Illinois, and Lewis University and the Region VIII NIFA (National Intercollegiate Flying Association) Conference. The Judges briefing was that afternoon and the weather was really good--sure makes the drive better. Wednesday was a good flight day, cloudy but with a good ceiling for VFR so we got in the Navigation Event and enough of the two landing events to be able to count them for competition credit. Thursday it rained all day. However, that just made it a really good day for ground events since they are inside anyway. Three events were completed--Simulated Comprehensive Aircraft Navigation (otherwise known as the SCAN Event), the Computer Accuracy Event and the Aircraft Recognition Event--and the judges scored them. Friday, weather wise, was only a little better than Thursday since it was not raining so much. I was, though, great weather for the Aircraft Preflight Inspection Event and the Ground Trainer (Simulator) Event since both are indoors. Saturday morning was a "make-up" day. The weather was good for flying...a good thing...since we got the Message Drop Event in then. I worked with both landing events, Preflight, and Message Drop. Lewis University is a great place to judge. It has a beautiful campus. Six teams were present for the conference: Indiana State University, Lewis University, Middle Tennessee State University, Purdue University, Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, and University of Illinois. The Regional Team Champions are: First: Southern Illinois University - Carbondale Second: Lewis University and Third: University of Illinois. (These teams will get invitations to the National Competition in May as will Indiana State University.) The Top Female Pilot was Jessica Campbell from Indiana State University. Way to Go Jessica!

WE have a list of items we will need in order to paint the compass rose at Greenville airport:

• 1 or 2 50-ft steel measuring tapes
• 1 0r 2 yellow chalk lines
• about 6 yellow or red lumber crayons
• electric paint stirrer
• 1-2 cans of gray or black spray enamel to cover accidents (I'll find out what color the ramp area is at Greenville)
• An artist's brush and several ounces of black enamel for the date stencil
• 4-incl and 9-inch paint rollers (enough for everyone) several with long handles
• 1- or 2- inch beveled paint brushes (sash brushes)
• Sturdy paint foller trays and disposable plastic liners
• Hammer and nail(s) for center pivot
• T-square or carpenter's square
• several brooms
• knee protector pads
• assorted rage, paper towels, trash bags, and paint thinner for clean-up
  

Please let me know if you have any of these items and would be willing to donate them to the cause of painting the compass rose next May (tentative date is 1-2 May 2010)

Painting the compass rose at Greenville IL airport (KGRE) is tentatively scheduled for 1-2 May 2009. The alternate will be 15-16 May since May 9 is Mother's Day. Please check you calendars for any conflicts. The NCS Spring Section Meeting is in Columbus OH 23-24 April and the NIFA SAFECON 2010 is at Indiana State Univ. in Terre Haute, IN 17-22 May.

The books and Jeppsen items reminded me of times long ago when I learned at Weiss Airport in the early 60's with Gene Taylor and Bob Richardson. Information on the Del Scharr Scholarship has been sent to the aviation programs at 20 universities in the midwest. Perhaps this year we'll have some viable candidates for the award.
Libby reported she will have hip surgery, not knee surgery and the date is the same.
