Ninety Nines Meeting: 3 pm at the Ninety Nines table at the MACTS
We will be raffling two goody baskets and a bottle of Champagne. If you have items for the goody baskets, it’s not too late. Please get them to Jean Murry by Thursday, 19 January. Her phone number is 314-469-5341.

To get to the Maryland Hts Center take I-270 to the Dorsett Rd exit, Turn west at the bottom of the exit ramp onto Dorsett Rd. Turn right (north) onto McKelvey Hills Dr. (this is the first street on the right west of I-270). Continue straight, about 0.7 miles, and the Maryland Hts Centre will be on the right.

Please plan to attend this meeting. We will need to decide whether or not our Chapter has the resources to host the Air Race Classic start in 2014. This would entail raising $10,000 for the Air Race Classic organization in addition to planning and funding all the needs of the racers as well as the activities associated with the start of the Air Race Classic as outlined in the revised Air Race Classic Start Committee syllabus that is included as an attachment to this Newsletter. If we decide not to host the Air Race Classic in 2014, the next opportunity is not until 2017.

Member News:
Susan Van Matre has nominated Delia Greer and Jean Murry for the 2012 Ninety Nines Award of Achievement for Humanitarian Efforts for their work with the Wings of Hope. A copy of the documentation submitted by Susan is attached. Certainly Delia and Jean are very dedicated workers and deserving of this award. We wish them good luck and hope they are selected for this honor.

Sue Mathias reports: "I'll be the speaker for the Saint Charles' Zontas this Wednesday, January 18. Sort of a milestone for me ... last time was 33 years ago when I reviewed "The Girl In Brown" about Amelia Earhart."

Greetings 99s,

Bill and I just wanted to let you know that I have accepted a new assignment with Pratt & Whitney as the Program Manager for the Adaptive Fan Rig, which is an advanced engine development. It means we will be moving to Hartford, CT, and it will happen pretty quickly. Diana is back in Texas and will continue her studies, but she is very supportive of the change. My plans are to start on 30 January. Bill will be coordinating all the move details over the next few months, so we both have our work cut out for us!

Bill, Diana and I all want to thank you for your support over the years. We treasure all the friendships and admire all your accomplishments! This was a tough decision and I’ve lost several nights sleep as I wrestled with the full impact of this decision. Of course it means I have to give up my vision of personally bringing the ARC 2014 to St. Louis, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen without me. That would be something you all will have to decide. Just give it some thought.

While it will be tough to leave St. Louis, we hope to stay in touch. Of course, we would welcome a visit whenever you’re in the area.

Everyone bring a covered dish, salad, or dessert to share. If possible, please let Jean know what you plan to bring. Her phone number is 314-469-3541. Jean lives in the Four Seasons sub-division off Woods Mills Rd, just south of Olive. If you are coming north on Woods Mill turn left into the second Four Seasons entrance. Turn left at the first street (Oakland Hills), go past the golf course, and Jean’s house is the 4th house on the right hand side.

If you have any Ninety Nines logoed items that you have collected over the years and no longer need or use, bring them to the party on Saturday. We will be trading, selling or raffling these items. If we make any money, it will go to the Del Scharr Scholarship fund.

Chapter and Member News:
Sue Mathias wrote that Susan Van Matre spend the summer at the Jeppesen Academy in Colorado received her FAA Dispatcher Certificate. She also passed the FAA ATP written exam.
We want to welcome new member Vikki Cates to our Chapter. Vikki is stationed at Scott AFB. We would also like to welcome back Sarah Arnac. We were happy to see her at our September meeting. Former Chapter member Sabrina Zwego has left our area and is now a member of the Northeast Kansas Chapter.

I received an inquiry through the Ninety Nines International organization about painting a compass rose at Harrisburg-Raleigh Airport (KHSB) in south central Illinois. I wrote to the airport management stating what would be required in terms of surveying the proposed site of the compass rose and the purchase of paint for the project. I have also written to the Kentucky Blue Grass Chapter regarding their willingness to help in this project. I have not received a response from either. Would our Chapter like me to pursue this opportunity to paint another compass rose?

Ninety Nines News:
Experimental Aircraft can now be included in Chapter flying events! Effective August 16, The Ninety-Nines, Inc. is now covered for experimental aircraft in addition to factory built fixed-wing and helicopters. Coverage continues to exclude ultra-lights, military aircraft, hang gliders and aircraft with over 50 seats. Expanding our coverage should provide Chapters and Sections with better participation at their flying events. You must notify Headquarters of all flying events by completing an insurance request form and submitting a $125/day fee. Also updated, the $250 fee for a certificate of insurance at events involving children is no longer required. Chapter Birthday Celebration and Meeting.

Our meeting followed a wonderful “Pot Luck luncheon” at the home of Jean Murry who provided us with a birthday cake to celebrate the birthday of our Greater St. Louis Chapter.

The meeting was called to order by Chairman, Jan Pocock at 1PM.

There were some concerns for Libby and Bob who were attending the air races and air show in Reno, Nevada.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Martha Norman reported she has collected dues for the coming year and also reported totals in our savings and checking accounts. Sue Mathias raised the question as to whether we might use some of this money on any projects or events coming up this year. Several ideas were discussed and Mary Kinnaw made the motion to investigate some of these ideas and decide later how best to make use of these funds. The motion was seconded by Vivian Waters and carried.

PROGRAM CHAIRMAN: Vice Chairman Jean Murry suggested that we alternate monthly meetings unless we have a good reason to meet during a particular month. She asked that we try skipping the October meeting and have our next meeting November 12 from 10AM to 4PM at Circle of Hope on Lindberg between Ladue and Olive. This will be a workshop to benefit heart and cancer research. Lunch will be served. The motion was made by Jean to have the November 12 date as our next meeting and this was seconded by Gussie Freese and passed.

Jean Murry reported the EAA of St. Louis is sponsoring The Golden Age of Aviation, September 23-25 at St. Louis Downtown Airport, Cahokia IL. They plan to have a real 1929 Ford Tri-Motor Airplane there and will offer 15 minute rides for $70. This aircraft is owned by the Experimental Aircraft Association in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. In addition the Greater St. Louis Air and Space Museum will have some activities. We will have some 99 volunteers along with Women With Wings also helping. There will also be a car show and a Tent Swing Dance under the Stars with a full “Kebab Dinner” and a cash bar. There will be a $10.00 donation for the Swing Dance and dinner.

Susan Van Matre has completed her dispatcher course in Colorado and inquired about possibly applying for our scholarship to complete her ATP cross country training. After some discussion everyone agreed we would be proud to consider her application along with others if she decides to do so.

CHRISTMAS PARTY: Jean reported they are considering several restaurants for the party and it will be announced later.

Since there was no further business, Jan asked for the motion to adjourn. Mary Kinnaw made the motion to adjourn and it was seconded by Susan Van Matre and passed.

The meeting adjourned at 1:45PM.

Chapter and Member News:
Our September meeting will be our annual Chapter Birthday Party on Saturday, 17 September at Jean Murry’s home. This is often a pot luck luncheon. If you have Ninety Nine logo-ed items like jewelry, clothing or bags that you no longer use or need, please bring them to the Party – we hope to auction, sell, or raffle the items to benefit the Del Scharr Memorial Scholarship Fund.

July was a busy month for the Ninety Nines. Delia Greer, Jean Murry, and Jan Pocock attended the Ninety Nines International Conference in Oklahoma City 14-16 July. They arrived on Thursday in time for the final tour of the renovated Ninety Nines headquarters and museum. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a whirlwind tour since the building closed 15 min after they arrived! The business meeting was mercifully brief with little controversy. The steak served at the banquet was excellent. There appeared to be fewer European members present than in previous years. OK City, like the rest of the Midwest, was hot, hot, hot! Jan toured the Cowboy Museum, bought a cowboy hat, then left it in the hotel lobby when they all returned home on Sunday. Fortunately the hat was still at the hotel Sunday evening, and they shipped it back to her. She promises to wear it to the August meeting.

On 28 July, there was a memorial service at the Masonic Cemetery in Nashville, IL for Mary Hagner Guthrie, WASP 44-4. Kate Garrison and Vivian Waters from the Greater St. Louis Ninety Nines, and Eve Cascella, LaVonne Deck, and Sarah Washington from the Women with Wings Chapter of the Women in Aviation attended the ceremony. Mary Guthrie died in 1981, but did not receive the military funeral, to which she was entitled, at her burial. Although only three or four family members and friends, a handful of local veterans and the five women pilots were in attendance, the ceremony was quite moving. There was an Air Force Honor Guard in attendance, complete with flag ceremony, rifle volleys, and taps played on a solitary bugle. Mary’s son Bruce Guthrie was presented the American flag. Kate Garrison read the poem Celestial Flight, that has become a tradition at WASP funerals. Anne Mongiovi and Libby Yunger attended EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh WI, but we missed seeing each other in all the hustle and bustle. At AirVenture the Women in Aviation were
celebrating 100 years of American women in aviation. Although other American women had flown prior to 1911, the first American woman to receive a pilot license was Harriet Quimby on 1 August 1911. Patrice Mullins has returned to her maiden name, Patrice Billings. According to her web site (http://www.patricebillings.com/about.asp) she is currently working on a novel inspired by her work as a police officer, helicopter pilot and sniper/precision marksman. Jan Pocock has information about and an application blank for a new $1000 scholarship that is being offered annually by the Chicago Area Ninety Nines. Job Opportunities:
Cathy Babis informed us that the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (that used to be the mapping agency) of the Dept. of Defense in St. Louis has an opening for a GEOINT Analyst (Aero Intel). Creve Coeur Airport

Creve Coeur airport has a barbecue every Sunday. The cost is $6 and includes the choice of one of two hot meats and a variety of hot and cold side dishes. The meeting will follow lunch.
If you are coming by auto, Creve Coeur Airport has become much easier to find. Take I-64 or
I-70 to I-270. If you’re coming from I-70 go south on I-270 and if you’re coming from I-64, go north on I-270. Go west on the Page Avenue Extension (M0-364). Exit at Maryland Hts. Expressway (second exit). Go right at the bottom of the ramp. Turn left at the second stoplight (the first light is River Valley Dr. the second light is Creve Coeur Mill Rd); the road ends in the airport.

Chapter News:
Fifteen members and guests attended the Installation Luncheon. The room as a little cozy, but that made for easy conversation during lunch. The food at Cardwell’s was excellent. Perhaps we’ll go there again sometime – hint, hint!

At the Installation luncheon, Ruth Bohnert asked when we were going to do another compass rose. I had previously talked with some of the Directors of the GSL Air & Space Museum about putting a rose on the ramp by the Museum. Since the airport would need to do prep work such as surveying the site and, if possible, purchasing the paint the project would need to be authorized by Bob McDaniel, the airport director, prior to making any plans. This summer we will also need to wash and polish Nikki Calpan’s Meyers OTW that the Museum owns. However, these projects will need to be placed on hold until we know more about the integrity of Hangar 2 that houses the Museum. Two weeks ago, the parapet on the SW corner of Hangar 2 fell and a large crack developed in the adjacent wall. The architects have said that the building can continue to be occupied but people should stay out of the building during heavy rain or high winds. A determination of the fate of the building should be forthcoming in the next few months.

St. Charles Flying Service is hosting it’s annual Open House and Airport Day on Saturday, 18 June from 10 am to 4 pm at Hangar 6 on the North Ramp at St. Charles County Airport aka Smartt Field (KSET). They will have a pot luck barbecue, spot landing and bomb drop competitions. The CAF will sell tickets for a noon flight around the area in the B-25. Jim Tecu will be there selling and signing copies of his new book (historical fiction), Voices of the Wright Brothers. There will be fly-in fuel discounts and fuel and airplane rental discounts for pilots taking part in the competitions. Chapter News:
April 16 turned out to be a very cold, blustery day – not good for washing an airplane. However those of us who attended got to meet one of our newer members, Nina Rossini. Nina is a professional chef from Springfield, IL where she has run the kitchen of the Governor’s Mansion for the past 4-5 governors. She is also very active in the Springfield Civil Air Patrol. Those of us who were not scared off by the weather revamped the Women in Aviatrion exhibit at the museum. We will reschedule the airplane wash for a warmer, sunnier Saturday.

We received the following note from Nelda Lee: Regretfully I will miss the luncheon as I will be in Alabama at the farm. I have not been since mid April and the Tuscaloosa tornado came near and has left us some clean up work. My brother and sister will be there also so we will clean up downed trees and check for damage. Tuscaloosa is 40 miles from the farm and many of my relatives lost their homes or had significant damage. Tuscaloosa is where I was taken in 2007 when I had the heart attack.....my mom was in Tuscaloosa when she died....we buy our cars there.....our doctors are there.............it is our town so we hope to help with recovery when we go down. I look forward to seeing you all another time. Have a good installation. Tell everyone hi for me.

Dinner at Olivers afterward for anyone interested

We will be washing Nikki Caplan’s Meyers OTW bi-plane that is on exhibit at the Museum. It is dope on fabric so we will not need to wax or polish it, but it is really very dirty and greatly in need of a bath. Everyone who comes, please wear old clothes and bring a couple of buckets, sponges and rags – bug sponges and brushes would probably also be helpful. It is supposed to be cool (high around 50) and there is concern about getting water into the wings and fuselage so we will probably just wash and rinse the plane by hand inside the hangar. The museum does have a long hose we can use if we can get the doors open to move the airplane outside. I will buy Woolite (that’s what the Museum people recommended that we use) and Bob will bring Turtle Wax to clean and wax the metal parts. Husbands, children, friends, neighbors, etc are welcome to join us.

Chapter News:
The exhibit at the World Trade Center in Clayton in which Vivian Waters was to have her photographs displayed has been cancelled. However her pieces are still on exhibit in a gallery show at the Poor Souls Gallery, 2701 14th St. in Old North St. Louis from 11 March to 26 May (http://www.meetup.com/Poor-Souls-Society/), and she will have a “one gal show” at the Third Degree Glass Factory, 5200 Delmar Blvd., from 14 April to 17 May. Vivian has invited us all to attend the Third Friday Open House at the Third Degree Glass Factory on Friday, 15 April at 6 pm. It will be a free evening of entertainment featuring fire, hot glass, great art, and cool music. It sounds like it will be well worth the effort to get out to U City for the evening.

Sherry LeMaster and her husband are relocating to Lexington, KY in April where she can be closer to her parents. She and her husband both have jobs as Financial Advisors there. We will miss you, Sherry, but good luck to both of you!

Sue Mathias will miss the airplane wash on Saturday. She is going to Hannibal with her book club. “Gonna stay in a haunted mansion, visit a cemetery under the Full Moon, dine at Lulubelle's on the Mississippi – wearing purple boas and lush red wax lips - to blend in with the history.” Now, doesn’t that sound like great fun!

February meeting: Pot Luck Luncheon and planning session for the March Girl Scout Aviation Event

Please bring your favorite wintertime goodies for everyone to share at our pot luck luncheon. Following lunch, we will plan the aviation event for the Girl Scouts that is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, 19 March, at the Wings of Hope hangar. The event would begin with a brief welcome and outline of the morning’s events, after which the girls would break up into 3-4 smaller groups and rotate through 3-4 learning stations. Some suggested stations include:

Investigation of the cockpit and flight surfaces of an actual aircraft – discuss flight instruments and how the flight controls change the configuration of the aircraft to allow it to ascend, descend, and turn.
Flying the flight simulators
Walkie talkies for radio communications
Navigation – sectional charts
MATS and the role of a flight nurse
Careers in aviation
Tour of the control tower

Please bring your ideas and what you would like to do at the event. If you will be unable to attend the meeting on Saturday but wish to help at the event, please contact me at girlpilot@sbcglobal.net or 314-725-0428.

Note that when I originally committed our Chapter to sponsor this event for the Girl Scouts I was told to expect an enrollment of 20-40 girls. However, as of last week, no Scouts had registered. This may be due to poor communication by the Girl Scout Council. When I polled our members over the weekend, most of the responses I received indicated a desire to move forward with planning the Girl Scout aviation event as originally scheduled in March. I will send additional syllabus information to the Girl Scout Council following our meeting on Saturday and ask that it be distributed to the troop leaders. Further I have told the Council that if fewer than 12 girls are registered by 26 February, we will cancel the event.

Congratulations Nelda! The National Aeronautics Association announced that Chapter member Nelda Lee has been selected to receive the Katherine and Marjorie Stinson Award for her outstanding contributions to aviation as a role model and pioneer female aerospace test engineer. I have attached a revised announcement of the award that summarizes Nelda’s many activities and achievements in aviation. Nelda will be presented the Stinson Trophy at the International Women in Aviation Conference in Reno, NV on 26 February. Please join me in congratulating Nelda on this well-deserved honor.

December meeting: Holiday Luncheon

The restaurant is located in Old Town St. Charles on the east (river) side of Main Street at Tompkins Street. Guests can be dropped off directly in front of the restaurant. There is street parking and a large city parking lot behind along S. Riverside Dr. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Main Street is always alive with carolers, musicians, carriage rides and Dickensian pageantry. There are many unique shops, making it a great place to look for unusual Christmas gifts.

Do not forget to bring non-perishable food and household items for the Circle of Concern food pantry. We will also be collecting small goodies for our wine and cheese raffle basket at the MACTS in January.

In November we had a very informative tour of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport with the new director, Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. We took a bus tour of the entire perimeter of the airport, including a run down the new runway. We also got to inspect the van that is used to determine runway stopping distance, which becomes reduced from rubber accumulation during multiple aircraft touch-downs. Rhonda answered our questions on a broad range of topics including the plans for the old McDonnell/Boeing site, potential new freight hubs, the impact of air carrier mergers on commercial operations, how landing fees are calculated and assessed, to name a few. We had no meeting in November, therefore, there are no November minutes.

Future Chapter Events:

I received the following information from Minetta Gardiner, editor of Waypoint:

First, we must apologize for not getting out the last issue of Waypoint. Rae Goodman has had some computer difficulties, and the issue is “locked” in her computer until she gets it back from repairs. So until I get an update from her, I cannot advise the membership when that issue will be shared with you. I am very sorry for this problem. In the meantime, I will be working on the next issue. And I will ensure that there is a back-up copy of the issue besides on my laptop only. So the January issue will be forthcoming.

It is Waypoint time again, and we are looking forward to receiving all the flying news that’s fit to print. The next issue of Waypoint will be released January 10th.

We have arranged a private tour of Lambert Airport with the new director, Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. Rhonda will share her journey in the aviation industry, discuss plans for Lambert, and give us a glimpse of operations "behind the scenes." Portions of the tour will be on a 26 seat bus.

AIRCRAFT MUST RE-REGISTER - If Issued Registration Before October 1, 2010. The Re-Registration and Renewal of Aircraft Registration rule went into effect on October 1, 2010. Aircraft registrations issued on or after this date will expire after three years when they may be renewed. Aircraft registered before October 1, 2010, are required to re-register during the next three years according to the schedule provided in 14 CFR Part 47.40. Reminder notices will be sent using the address of record, make sure your address is up to date. The first group of aircraft to be re-registered will be aircraft that have a current registration issue date during the month of March, from all years. Application for re-registration of these aircraft should be made between November 1, 2010, and January 31, 2011. Making an early application will ensure the new certificate of registration can be delivered before the old certificate expires on March 31, 2011. Questions may be directed toll free to 866-762-9434. Present: Ruth Bohnert (tour and meeting only), Gussie Freese (lunch only), Delia Greer, Mary Kinnaw, Sherry Lemaster (tour and meeting only), Sue Mathias, Jean Murry, Jan Pocock (lunch only), Susan Van Matre, Vivian Waters (lunch only), and Libby Yunger.

The meeting followed lunch at the Wine Country Garden Restaurant in Defiance and a tour of the St. Louis TRACON in Weldon Sprints.

The meeting was called to order at 3:15 pm by our Chairman, Jean Murry.

We had no meeting in September so there were no minutes. There was no treasurer’s report

Old Business:
Libby Yunger updated the group on the Girl Scout event that is scheduled for Saturday, 19 March 2011 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at Wings of Hope. Member Sabrina Zwego is a faculty member at SIU-Carbonhdale and a certified ground instructor. She will be able to provide four flight simulators for the event, as well as the help of the WAI chapter at SIU-Carbondale. Jean Murry said the Wings of Hope hangar will be available for the event. Delia Greer will have the MATS plane open and will talk about the role of the flight nurse in transporting medical patients. We will have a short planning meeting for the Girl Scout event following the Lambert tour and luncheon on 13 November. The Holiday Luncheon will be on Saturday, 11 December at the Mother-in-Law House restaurant on Old Capitol in historic downtown St. Charles. Members are asked to bring non-perishable food and other items to donate to the Circle of Concern. We will also collect additional items for our raffle basket for the MACTS at that time.

There was no New Business.

If you did not sign up for the TRACON tour by 30 September, you will not be able to attend. Please remember to bring an official picture ID that is required by the FAA to enter the TRACON. Wine Country Gardens is located on at 2711 S. Highway 94 in Defiance. If you are coming from the north on I-270 take the Page Avenue Extension into St. Charles. That merges with Hwy 94 west (toward Weldon Springs). If you are coming from the south or east take I-64 to the Hwy 94 exit and turn left (southwest) at the light at the bottom of the exit ramp. Follow Hwy 94 west past the Weldon Springs Conservation area. Wine Country Gardens is on the right just before you get to the city of Defiance. If you are not going to lunch, meet the lunch group at the TRACON at 1:45 pm. The St. Louis TRACON is in the Missouri Research Park in St. Charles. Take I-64 west and exit at Hwy 94. Turn left at the bottom of the exit ramp, cross over I-64 and turn left at Research Park Drive. The building is on the left but back from the road and easy to miss, so watch the signage. Its address is 14 Research Park Dr.

Notes from September
There was no meeting in September. Only five members (Jean Murry, Susan Van Matre, Gussie Freese, Delia Greer, and Jan Pocock) attended the tour of St. Louis University and the Parks College Campus on 11 September. However, those who went were very enthusiastic about the event. Tour guide, Susan Bloomfield, was knowledgeable and entertaining. Everyone could ride in the golf cart so walking was not a problem. It was suggested that we schedule another Parks College tour at a future date when more members will be available to attend.

Future Chapter Events:
November meeting: Our tour of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is scheduled for Saturday, 13 November, with Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, Airport Director. We will meet at Rhonda's office at 10 am for a behind the scenes tour of the airfield, baggage hangar, and underground operations. We'll be in a passenger van for a portion of the tour and must limit the group to 28 members and guests. At 11:30 am, following the tour, Rhonda will be our lunch guest at the Missouri Vineyard restaurant on the field. Parking will be free, with details to follow as the date draws nearer. We need a confirmed headcount by 2 November, anyone wanting to attend contact Susan Van Matre at slvanmatre@gmail.com.

Holiday/Christmas Luncheon:
Our Holiday/Christmas luncheon will be held on Saturday, 11 December at the Mother-in-Law House Restaurant on Main Street, St. Charles. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Main Street is always alive with carolers, musicians, carriage rides and Dickensian pageantry. There are many unique shops, making it a great place to look for unusual Christmas gifts.

Girl Scout Event:
Our chapter will be hosting a program for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri on Saturday, 19 March from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at Wings of Hope. There will between 20-40 girls in grades 6-12 (ages 11-18). Please reserve this date for the Girl Scout program, since we will need everyone’s commitment to do this properly. I sent the following program description to Michelle Johnson, Girl Scout Program Manager: The syllabus would include the principles of flight (the concepts of lift, gravity, thrust, and drag), how an aircraft becomes and remains airborne. We would show the girls how aircraft controls change the configuration of the aircraft and allow the aircraft to take off and land. We could also discuss a little about navigation - when you're in the air above the clouds, how do you know where you are. We could also discuss a little about communication - who a pilots needs to speak with prior to departure, during departure, en route, and prior to and during landing. The girls would get to see airplanes and their controls and instrumentation but they would not actually get into the aircraft (we could arrange stools so that the girls can see into the cockpit fairly readily and safely).

Member News:
Teresa Camp, Sue Mathias, and Susan Van Matre attended Monika Petrillo’s film Flyabout at Boeing on 24 September and the pre-show dinner with Monika at Pi Pizzeria. Sue’s friend, Marcia Maroe Connaghan (who is a long-time pilot-wannabe) was so impressed by Monika and her journey that she wrote a review for the St. Louis Small Business Examiner. Monika said it was the first time she had ever been interviewed as a "businesswoman". Several of our members vacationed in September or early October. Jean Murry toured Egypt with her sister. Libby Yunger and Bob Kraemer were at the Reno Air Races helping out with George André’s Zipper Air Racing Team. George and Zipper II placed 6th in the Biplane Gold Race. Delia Greer went to Albuquerque for the International Balloon Fiesta.

Other September Events:
We have been invited by the Women with Wings Chapter of WAI to attend the showing of Flyabout at the Boeing Auditorium on Friday, 24 September at 6:00 pm. You may bring guests to this event. Enter through the Prologue Room entrance. The Prologue Room opens at 5 pm. Admission is free but the WWW are accepting donations to help pay for Monika Petrillo’s airfare from California to St. Louis. Flyabout documents Monika’s flight with her father in a Cessna 172 around the periphery of Australia. Monika will answer questions following the movie. Additional information about this event is attached in a separate file.

September 11-12 – Air Power over the Midwest air show and open house at Scott Air Force Base featuring the Blue Angels. Gates are open from 9 am to 5 pm both days. If you have a chance to attend, stop by the Soaring Society booth and say hello to Anne Mongiovi.

September 17-18 – Great Forest Park Balloon Race in Central Field near the Jewel Box in Forest Park. Balloon glow is Friday evening, September 17, from 7:00-8:30 pm, and the race is scheduled for Saturday, September 18. Events begin at noon and the race begins at 4:30 pm. Rain date for the race is Sunday, September 19. All events and parking are free.

September 18 – CAF Hangar Dance at their hangar at St. Charles County (Smartt) Airport (KSET) from 6:00-10:00 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.

September 25-26 – St. Charles County Airport (Smartt Field) Open House, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day.

Michelle Johnson, Program Manager of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, would like us to present a program to the Girl Scouts sometime between February-May, 2011. They are currently working on their schedule and we need to get back to them with plans for the event as soon as possible. Perhaps we could do an introduction to flight next March at Wings of Hope.

Vivian Waters will have three photographs from her recent Arizona trip on exhibit at the Art Saint Louis Gallery Show, Room with a View. The exhibit runs from September 13 through October 21. The meeting followed our Chapter Birthday Party during lunch at Creve Coeur airport. We noshed on hamburgers or turkey “filet mignon” with condiments, stir fried vegetables, and potato salad topped off by a fabulous sheet cake from McArthur Bakery that was donated by Jan Pocock. Martha Norman and Jean Murry brought photos of past Chapter events. It was fun to visit and reminisce.

The meeting was called to order at 1:30 pm by our Chairman, Jean Murry. We had no meeting in July so there were no minutes. Martha Norman presented the treasurer’s report. Jean Murry reported that we had received a thank you note from the Wings of Hope for our $150 donation in support of Teresa Camp and Beverly Cleair in the Air Race Classic. Jan Pocock was thanked for bringing the cake.
Gussie Freese reported that our library display is on vacation this month but will be in the Lewis and Clark Library in September.

Old Business:

Susan Van Matre clarified arrangements for our tour of the Saint Louis University (SLU) and Parks College Campus on Saturday, 11 September. There is no limit to the number of attendees but the golf cart that will be available for anyone who is unable to walk the entire distance of the tour will only accommodate 6 people. There will be a tour of SLU from 10:30 – 11:30 am and a tour of the new Parks College campus from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm. This will be followed by lunch at 1 pm at The Fountain on Locust. The parking arrangements and assembly point will be announced in the September Newsletter.

The October meeting will be a tour of the TRACON in Weldon Springs followed by lunch at one of the wineries on Rte 94. Once Ruth Bohnert’s son knows his work schedule, the date will be set and Vivian Waters will make reservations for us at the Winery.

The Lambert Airport Tour is scheduled for 13 November.

The Holiday Luncheon will be on Saturday, 11 December at the Mother-in-Law House restaurant on Old Capitol in historic downtown St. Charles. The group decided that we would order from the menu.

Our January meeting will be at the Midwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show. We will again be raffling a goodie basket. Libby Yunger has donated a basket, bottle of wine and salsa. Jean Murry asked the Chapter members to donate other items for the basket.

Martha Norman announced that the Chapter Handbook would be distributed in September.

Since attendance has improved for the first three meetings this year, the group decided to continue calling members each month to remind them of the meeting date, time, and place.

New Business:

The Women with Wings Chapter of WAI asked our Chapter to join them at the Boeing Theater for the showing of Flyabout – an autobiographical documentary by Monika Petrillo about her flight around Australia with her father in a single engine aircraft. The Boeing Prologue Room opens at 5 pm, the film is at 6 pm, and there will be a Q&A session with Monika Petrillo following the film. Enter the Boeing Theater through the Prologue Room.

We discussed future program ideas. 1) Jean Murry suggested that we view the movie Pearl - a biography of Eula “Pearl” Carter Scott. She was the daughter of a wealthy Oklahoma oilman his wife, a Chickasaw Indian. With the encouragement of her father’s friend, Wiley Post, Pearl obtained a pilot’s license at age 14 in 1928. She is the youngest women and the first female Native American to obtain a pilot’s license. This movie was shown at Oshkosh this year but is very low budget and is unlikely to have wide distribution in theaters. 2) Libby Yunger suggested that Susan Van Matre contact Anne Mongiovi to see if she would be willing to arrange for us to fly the sailplanes at Highland-Wynet Airport.

The fall meeting of the North Central Section will be a joint meeting with the Southeast Section in Nashville, TN, on 1-3 October 2010. Jan Pocock is planning to attend and would appreciate if someone from the chapter would share travel and lodging expenses with her.

Note that lunch at Creve Coeur is now $6 – but the food is always excellent and well worth the modest cost. If you haven’t driven to Creve Coeur airport lately, the easiest way to get there is to take I-270 and exit at the Page Ave Extension (MO-364) west. Exit MO-364 at Maryland Hts Expressway. Go north (right) on Maryland Hts Expressway approximately 1 mile to Creve Coeur Mill Rd. Turn left at Creve Coeur Mill Rd and follow it into the airport parking lot. We hope many of you will come by and wish our Chapter a Happy Birthday.

July Event:
There was no business meeting in July, therefore there will be no minutes. However, 23 members and guests attended Patrice Mullins presentation on her career as St. Louis County police officer and Chief helicopter pilot. In addition to Patrice, chapter members in attendance were Sarah Arnac, Teresa Camp, Delia Greer, Mary Kinnaw, Sue Mathias, Patrice Mullins, Jean Murry, Martha Norman, Jan Pocock, Susan Van Matre, and Libby Yunger. We had several guests from the Women with Wings chapter of WAI and from St. Charles Zonta, of which Patrice is a past president. Patrice’s presentation took the form of an interview moderated by Nanette Malher, followed by questions from the audience. Patrice related highlights of her life from 5-year-old B-B gun marksman through several changes in her college major to a post-college desk job to the police academy. She told of many of her more harrowing or interesting experiences as a police officer and later in the police helicopter unit and as a sniper on the SWAT team. Her goal was always to be the best police officer that she could be. Moderator Nanette Malher is a Ninety Nine from Nashville TN where she owns Aviatrix Enterprises (www.aviatrixenterprises.com). She was in town to garner support for a documentary she is producing on the life and times of Bobbi Trout, entitled “If I Reach” – The Bobbi Trout Story. Bobbi was a charter member of the Ninety Nines whom Nanette met when they both attended Amelia Earhart’s 90th birthday gathering in Atchison KS in 1987. Fifteen years later, when Bobbi was in her 90s, she asked Nanette to help her create a web site (www.bobbitrout.com) so that her memorabilia from the early years of women in aviation would not be lost. Nanette was also involved in the production of the recent documentary on the 1929 Women’s Air Derby entitled Breaking through the Clouds: The First Women’s National Air Derby. This air race was the first time the women pilots had worked together to do something on a national scale, and it became the impetus for the formation of the Ninety Nines (www.breakingthroughtheclouds.com).

Member News:
We were very happy that member Sarah Arnac could attend our July meeting. Sarah is an aeronautical engineering student at Purdue University in Indiana and is now dividing her time between classes in Indiana and her internship with NASA in California, with only occasional stops in the St. Louis area to visit family. She is planning to change her Ninety Nines affiliation to a chapter in California but she knows she is always welcome to visit the Greater St. Louis chapter when she is in the area.

One of Susan Van Matre’s guests at the July talk was Jennie Fosdick, flight instructor at Air Associates, the new flight school at Spirit of St. Louis Airport. Susan recently flew with Jennie – and, Susan, we hope that’s just a first step to flying PIC again. Another interesting note: Susan and Patrice got to talking at the luncheon and discovered that not only did they both grow up in the same North St. Louis County neighborhood but they were in first grade together. Now that’s a small world!

Patrice Mullins, formerly Chief Pilot Mullins, knows a little something about S.W.E.A.Ttm as it relates to these success tips: Maintain a Sense of humor, Work hard, Encourage Enthusiasm, Adapt to any situation, and Trust your Team. After becoming the first female to graduate at the top of her class in the history of the Greater St. Louis Police Academy, and receiving recognition as First in Firearms, Patrice took her love of flying and aviation into a dream job as the first female police officer to become a helicopter pilot (in the United States for a law enforcement agency). At the tender age of 27 in 1984, she began to fly air patrol over the St. Louis metro region, now the nation’s largest geographical region in airborne law enforcement covering 1200 square miles.
Patrice was a member of the SWAT Team for 10 years and was an active part of responding to hostage crises, and other high-risk tactical situations.
Upon retiring after serving 28 years with the St Louis County Police Department, Patrice is bringing her hard-earned experience and wisdom to groups of all sizes by sharing stories of survival, of overcoming obstacles, and of re-inventing oneself.

Delia Greer and Jean Murry will be attending AirVenture 2010 in Oshkosh from 28 July to 1 August and will be working in the Ninety-Nines tent on Thursday, Friday,and Saturday. If you’ll be at AirVenture stop in to see them! Anne Mongiovi will also be attending AirVenture.

Libby Yunger is resuming many of her activities after her bilateral hip replacement in April. She is back flying (but not as PIC), being a Docent at the zoo, and she recently spoke on the History of the Ninety-Nines to the EAA Chapter at Jeff City. She also has a talk planned on the History of Women in Aviation to be presented to the Lake of the Ozarks Chapter of Missouri Pilots Association in September after she returns from the Reno Air Races.

Photographer Vivian Waters will have exhibits in a couple of gallery shows this month. She will have one work hanging in the Contemporary Art Museum’s Fifth Annual City Wide Open Studios. The preview reception is 20 July and the show runs through 30 July. The Museum is located at 3750 Washington Blvd., St. Louis MO 63108 in Grand Center. Cathy Babis will miss our meeting this month because she is becoming SCUBA certified during that weekend. She also reports that there is a 50/50 chance that she will attend AirVenture this year on business.

Bobbi Trout was a pioneering and record-setting aviatrix during the late 1920s and early 1930s. Her friends and peers were the likes of Amelia Earhart, Walt Disney, and Will Rogers. She was a mentor to women in aviation throughout her 97 years on earth. Her story inspires young and old and must not be forgotten.

The meeting was called to order at 12:30 pm by chairman, Jean Murry. Our previous event was the Installation luncheon and there were no minutes. Libby Yunger read the Treasurer's Report received from Martha Norman and it was accepted as read. Martha and Libby will audit the treasurer's books sometime before the end of June.

Susan Van Matre led the discussion of the programs for the 2010-2011. The following programs have been finalized:

July 24, 2010 - Patrice Mullins will present her experiences as a helicopter pilot with the St. Louis County Police at 11 am at Wings of Hope. Lunch at a restaurant in the Chesterfield Valley will follow. The Women with Wings will be invited to this presentation

August 15, 2010 - Lunch at noon at Creve Coeur Airport

September 11, 2010 – Tour of the Parks College Campus in Mid-town. Lunch to follow at Fountain on Locust. Time to be announced

October - date and time to be announced - Tour of the St. Louis TRACON. Women with Wings will be invited to join us. Lunch afterward at a winery.

Ideas were discussed to encourage meeting attendance. 1) Several volunteers will call members in the week prior to each meeting to encourage them to attend. 2) Members will be encouraged to bring a non-member pilot or student pilot to our meetings. 3) We will ask Rhonda Hamm-Niebreugge to arrange a newspaper story of our tour of Lambert Airport. 4) Members should check our website on a regular basis and request that Laura Million (our web master) remove old information is removed or submit news items or photos of our events for our website.
Libby Yunger moved and Mary Kinnaw seconded that we donate $150 to the Wings of Hope in support of Teresa Camp and Beverly Cleair if they participate in the Air Race Classis. The motion passed.

We discussed the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri request that we present a science/aviation program at their day camp for grades 6-12 at Florissant Valley Community College during the week of 12-16 July. We do not have a suitable off-airport program and will decline the request.

Jean Murry announced that our proxy votes for the International Conference in Hawaii have been given to Rita Adams of the Chicago Chapter.

Mary Kinnaw was named Corresponding Secretary and will write thank you letters to our invited speakers.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:50 pm.

July Meeting

Saturday, 19 June from 11 am to 5 pm - Potluck lunch and pool party at the Chapter One Clubhouse hosted by Vivian Waters. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish to share. Lunch will be at 11:30 am and the meeting will follow at about 1 pm.
Directions to Chapter One coming from the east , take I-270 or Mo - 141 to US 40(I-64) west to across the Missouri River into St Charles County to exit 10 (MO 94) toward St. Charles. Turn right at the exit ramp and go approximately 0.5 mi to Siedentop Rd (first light). Turn left on Siedentop and continue to Hemingway Lane (Hemmingway bears left to the clubhouse.)
This meeting is always a lot of fun and we hope to see many of our members on Saturday!

The Women with Wings Chapter of WAI are planning to paint a compass rose at Washington Airport in March 2011. The decision was made that the Women with Wings would lead project but that we would help them. The Ninety-Nines logo would not be used.
Other programs that are being pursued are:

Patrice Mullins to discuss her experiences as a St. Louis County Police helicopter pilot. This would be presented at Wings of Hope and the Women With Wings would be invited to attend
Tour of Parks College
Tour of the St. Louis TRACON in St. Charles followed by a winery visit.
Tour of Lambert Airport with the new director followed by lunch at her wine restaurant
Compass Rose pre-party in February at the Wings of Hope with the Women with Wings

Girl Scout Event: Libby Yunger has had discussions with Michelle Johnson, Program Director of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri. She would like us to present a science/aviation related activity at their day camp for grades 6-12 that will be held at Florissant Valley Community College the week of 12-16 July. Ideas and volunteers for this program would be greatly appreciated. Please bring these ideas to the meeting on Saturday or e-mail them to Libby at girlpilot@sbcglobal.net

Del Scharr Scholarship
Kristie Leinecki is our Del Scharr Scholarship winner this year. She just completed her senior year in Commercial Aviation at the University of North Dakota – Grand Forks but will be continuing on for post-graduate training this autumn. At the time she applied, she had 320 flight hours and was working on her CFI rating. She is originally from Hawaii, so North Dakota must be quite a change for her. We wish her success in her future endeavors.

The Compass Rose Project was a huge success! We had our own engineer, Teresa Camp who directed the whole process and along with Susan Van Matre planned everything perfectly. Mother Nature gave us the best weather on Sunday and everything was accomplished in one day. Since Teresa is also a member of the St. Louis Women In Aviation, many of them came to help us in this project. The barbeque lunch provided by the Greenville Airport Staff was excellent and kept everyone working all day! We must thank everyone who helped us to make this such a great experience and success.

Our Installation Luncheon is planned for Saturday, May 22 at 12:00PM at Walpango Restaurant in the Chesterfield Mall. Please make your reservations by May 14 to Jan Pocock, 636-394-5734. Please call her because we need to know a count of persons expected.

Hello everyone: With Mother Nature’s strange weather conditions last month, we decided to just skip the meeting and plan to have a good one in March. We want to see everyone there so we can celebrate the new Spring Season together.

The meeting will be held Sunday March 21st at Jean Murry's home, 33 Oakland Hills Drive in Chesterfield at 1PM. We're hoping for a beautiful day so we can have a pot luck picnic on her porch.

Sandwich meat, bread and the usual sandwich spreads will be furnished.

Please let Jean know if you will be coming and what you plan to bring so we have a good variety of other goodies. Her phone number is 314-469-3541.

Directions to Jean's House. If you're coming from the south take MO Rte 141 north and that becomes Woods Mill Rd. Take it almost to the northern end at Olive Street (if you get to Olive you've gone too far). About 2.5 miles north of the I-64 (US 40) interchange on the left is a sign for Four Seasons. Turn left onto Broadmoor Dr. Take the first left onto Oakland Hills Dr. You will pass the golf course on the right then Jean's is the fifth house on the right after the golf course.

We will be painting a compass rose at Greenville IL airport on 1-2 May 2010. The rain date is 15-16 May.

Nelda Lee and Teresa Camp are in charge of this project so please contact them if you have supplies or plan to help. We will be discussing plans for the compass rose project at our March meeting.

Members Present: Jean Murry, Jan Pocock, Vivian Waters, Gussie Freese, Liby Yunger, Delia Greer, Sue Mathias, Mary Kinnaw, Nelda Lee, Martha Norman and Teresa Camp. Visitors: Chris Zern, Susan Van Matre, Jack Kinnaw, Bob Kremer and Bill Camp.

The meeting was called to order by Chairman, Libby Yunger at 1:35 PM following a Christmas Luncheon planned by Delia Greer at "Jimmy's On The Park" in Clayton MO.

Libby introduced our visitors and prospective members and asked each to give a little information about themselves and tell something about their flying experience.

MINUTES: the minutes from the Library meeting were not available and will be read at the next meeting. Libby discussed her talk about "99 Years of Women In Aviation” and “The History Of The Ninety Nines". She is available to give these talks and will be speaking at the EAA Christmas Party.

TREASURER'S REPORT: Treasurer, Martha Norman reported there are no changes since the last meeting. She reported there is one application for our scholarship so far this year.

OLD BUSINESS: Libby said she will not be available for meetings on Saturdays for awhile and the motion was made to plan our meetings on Sunday afternoons as needed by Mary Kinnaw and seconded by Jan Pocock and carried.. Jean will be in charge of our table at the Midwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show in January 2010 and we will have a meeting also at that time. Our February, 2010 meeting will be at Creve Coeur Airport on the 21st. We will meet at 12 noon for lunch and the meeting will follow. The painting of the compass rose is planned for May 1, 2010 at Greenville Airport. Jean Murry volunteered to chair that project.

NEW BUSINESS: Libby asked that we have library displays planned for February, July and August 2010. We will need to have a display in January at New Ballas and Indian Trails. She suggested we try some of the girls high schools librarys in the area for displays. Since there was no further business, the motion to adjourn was made by Sue Mathias and seconded by Delia Greer and carried.

Our November meeting will be in the East Room of the St. Louis County Library Headquarters in Ladue. The date is Saturday November 14 at 11AM. Our program is "99 Years of women in Aviation, 1910-2009" This will be presented by our Chairman, Libby Yunger. Libby has given this program at different libraries and if you haven't herd it, be sure to come for this meeting. If you have heard it come anyway. We want to see you!

Does anyone know which Greater St. Louis Ninety-Nines have been inducted into the Forest of Friendship besides Del Scharr, Nelda Lee, and Dorothy Spangler? Be sure to let Libby know. There are more and we need to list them.

We who attended the preview showing of “Amelia" at the Bluffs had a very special experience. Greater St. Louis Chapter had a special reserved section which we managed to fill and the movie was spectacular! Several gals had dinner at a restaurant in the Bluffs before the movie. It was a special time for us. Nelda reported she brought a former member of our chapter, Peggy Bert who now lives in Sandy, Utah and also in Carlsbad, California. She no longer flies, but still loves aviation Her son is a captain with UPS.
It was good to see her again.

This is a report sent by Martha Norman about the NIFA competition where she was a judge. Thanks Martha!

We left Tuesday (October 20) for Romeoville, Illinois, and Lewis University and the Region VIII NIFA (National Intercollegiate Flying Association) Conference. The Judges briefing was that afternoon and the weather was really good--sure makes the drive better. Wednesday was a good flight day, cloudy but with a good ceiling for VFR so we got in the Navigation Event and enough of the two landing events to be able to count them for competition credit. Thursday it rained all day. However, that just made it a really good day for ground events since they are inside anyway. Three events were completed--Simulated Comprehensive Aircraft Navigation (otherwise known as the SCAN Event), the Computer Accuracy Event and the Aircraft Recognition Event--and the judges scored them. Friday, weather wise, was only a little better than Thursday since it was not raining so much. I was, though, great weather for the Aircraft Preflight Inspection Event and the Ground Trainer (Simulator) Event since both are indoors. Saturday morning was a "make-up" day. The weather was good for flying...a good thing...since we got the Message Drop Event in then. I worked with both landing events, Preflight, and Message Drop. Lewis University is a great place to judge. It has a beautiful campus. Six teams were present for the conference: Indiana State University, Lewis University, Middle Tennessee State University, Purdue University, Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, and University of Illinois. The Regional Team Champions are: First: Southern Illinois University - Carbondale Second: Lewis University and Third: University of Illinois. (These teams will get invitations to the National Competition in May as will Indiana State University.) The Top Female Pilot was Jessica Campbell from Indiana State University. Way to Go Jessica!

WE have a list of items we will need in order to paint the compass rose at Greenville airport:

1 or 2 50-ft steel measuring tapes
1 0r 2 yellow chalk lines
about 6 yellow or red lumber crayons
electric paint stirrer
1-2 cans of gray or black spray enamel to cover accidents (I'll find out what color the ramp area is at Greenville)
An artist's brush and several ounces of black enamel for the date stencil
4-incl and 9-inch paint rollers (enough for everyone) several with long handles
1- or 2- inch beveled paint brushes (sash brushes)
Sturdy paint foller trays and disposable plastic liners
Hammer and nail(s) for center pivot
T-square or carpenter's square
several brooms
knee protector pads
assorted rage, paper towels, trash bags, and paint thinner for clean-up

Please let me know if you have any of these items and would be willing to donate them to the cause of painting the compass rose next May (tentative date is 1-2 May 2010)

Painting the compass rose at Greenville IL airport (KGRE) is tentatively scheduled for 1-2 May 2009. The alternate will be 15-16 May since May 9 is Mother's Day. Please check you calendars for any conflicts. The NCS Spring Section Meeting is in Columbus OH 23-24 April and the NIFA SAFECON 2010 is at Indiana State Univ. in Terre Haute, IN 17-22 May.

Our October meeting is scheduled to be held at the home of Martha Norman. The date is Saturday, October 18 at 2 PM. Here are directions to her home.

Directions to Martha's house:
From the west take 141 or I-270 to I-55 south, from the north take I-70 to I-55 south and from the east take I-255 to I-55 south. Get off at exit 174B, US67 south. After approximately 35.6 miles, exit at state hwy W. Turn right at the bottom of the exit ramp and continue on Hwy W for about 7 miles. Turn left at state hwy V. Continue on State Hwy V for about 8.6 miles. This ends at Maple Street in Pilot Knob. Take a slight left at Maple Street and continue about a quarter mile to MO-21. Continue past Madison St. on MO-21 south to MO-72 (You will turn right on Pine St. and then left onto MO-72 (which does not seem to have another name but there is a Casa Hueva Restaurant on the left and a grocery on the right). Go about 0.5 mi. and turn left on Russellville Rd (there is a stone gazebo on the northeast corner of Russelville and MO-72). Go another approx. 0.5 mi and turn right on Cemetery Rd (there's a cemetery on the corner). In another approx. 0.5 mi the road will jog right and then left, past the second job turn right on Country Club Dr. and then left on Cedar Lane (looks like it's the first left turn off Country Club Dr. If you get to the Country Club you've gone too far. Martha's house is on the left side on Cedar Lane.

If you want to fly into Farmington instead of driving. let Martha know in advance so that she can arrange transportation to her house from the airport.

Hello Fellow Niney-Nines,

Martha Norman has offered to have the October meeting at her home in Ironton MO at 2 pm on Sunday, 18 October. Martha's church is having a weiner roast and hay ride at 4 pm on Sunday and anyone wishing to stay is very welcome. Jean Murry has offered to drive down anand Bob and I will either drive down or fly into Farmington depending on the weather. Both of us can take passengers (Jean can take 3, I can take 2). Jean is not planning to stay for the hay ride, Bob and I probably will stay for the hayride.

Please respond to this e-mail if you plan to attend the meeting. Mention whether or not you plan to stay for the hayride. Also let me know if you plan to drive down to Ironton and if you can take passengers. Ths will be a great opportunity to see the fall foliage and stop at St. Genevieve or Kimmswick on the way down or back. I hope many of our members will plan to attend.

Vice Chairman Kayleen Amerson called the meeting to order at 1:40 pm.

MINUTES: The minutes from the July meeting were read by Kayleen Amerson. The motion to approve the minutes was made by Jean Murry and seconded by Gussie Freese and carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Martha Norman presented the treasurer’s report. The chapter took in $30 in dues, $30 for three luggage tags (at $10 a piece), and a raffle ticket was sold. $77 went to Waypoint. A note was made that paper Waypoints are now $7, up $2 from last year. Members who do not mind receiving only electronic copies are encouraged to discontinue their paper copies to save chapter funds. The chapter currently has $2,892.46 in savings and $3,181.64 in checking. Martha Norman will move $1,000 this month from checking to savings. The total chapter funds are $6,074.10. The motion to approve the report was made by Jan Pocock and seconded by Delia Greer and passed.

OLD BUSINESS: Jean Murry reminded members that this was our chapter’s 60th birthday. The Greater St. Louis Chapter is one of the oldest in the North Central Section.

Library Exhibits. The library exhibits were discussed and the consensus was to carry on into next year. County libraries will host the exhibit every two years, so we can start going back to libraries that have already hosted. Gussie Freese reminded members that we should look for opportunities outside libraries to set up the display, such as The Pointe, a sports and recreation center in Ballwin, MO.

Compass Rose Painting. It was decided to do the painting at Greenville Airport (KGRE) on October 24 and 25th. The airport will provide the paint and have the needed survey completed prior to our project. Jean Murry will buy chalk lines, sidewalk chalk, roller covers and be reimbursed from the chapter. Chapter members are asked to bring and supplies they have available, to include: rags, rollers (with extension poles), brushes, tape measures, paper towels, and rubber gloves. Be sure to wear old clothes and shoes as it can get messy.

NEW BUSINESS: Delia Greer explained that Jimmy’s, the location of the chapter Christmas party, will only accept checks or cash, so come prepared. No credit/debit cards will be accepted.

Kayleen Amerson read a note from the 99s Public Relations Chairman about the movie premiere of the Fox Searchlight movie Amelia. It was suggested in the note to have an informational booth set up in area theaters during the first two weeks after the movie is released. The opening is October 23rd. The painting coincides with the previously scheduled compass rose painting so the topic was tabled for possible discussion at the October meeting at Greenville.

The motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Jan Pocock and seconded by Delia Greer. The meeting adjourned at 2:15 PM.

MINUTES: The minutes from the July meeting were presented by Mary Kinnaw. The motion to approve the minutes was made by Jan Pocock and seconded by Ruth Bohnert and carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Martha Norman absent. Her report was presented by Libby Yunger. Sales money from luggage tags and compass rose patches was deposited in the scholarship fund. The motion to approve the report was made by Jan Pocock and seconded by Mary Kinnaw and passed.

OLD BUSINESS: Jean Murry has requested we change the date of the Chapter Birthday Party to September 27. The time will be 12:30 PM and if you need more time after church services later will be fine. This event will be held at Jean’s home and she will furnish meat and Birthday Cake. Please bring a side dish for pot luck. Be sure to come and celebrate!!!

NEW BUSINESS: Compass Rose Painting. It was decided to do the painting at Greenville Airport on October 24 and 25th. If necessary we will have a later date in case of rain. The airport will provide the paint and possibly barbeque for workers.
Libby will talk with the folks at that airport to get the needed survey prior to our project.

Libby discussed having a Girl Scout Program regarding careers in aviation for women since we have had a request from Laura Dierberg Ayers to provide this service to the girl scouts. Jean suggested we have this at the Wings of Hope location. It was decided to do the program and the location would be a good one.

LIBRARY EXHIBITS: The library exhibits were discussed and the schedule has been set up. Libby Yunger said she is giving a talk at the Maplewood Library on May 10 at 7 PM. She will also be speaking at the Missouri Pilots Association on Wednesday October 14. Try to attend on the 14th and give our support as 99’s! Libby is willing to speak at other libraries if requested to do so.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION: Jan Pocock, Jean Murry and Martha Norman attended the International Convention in Chicago and were in charge of the hospitality room for our chapter. They purchased all the food and set up the room which was a big job for them. International did re-imburse our chapter for all the expense. They reported the convention was a big success and well attended. They had a great time!

Libby reported the St. Charles Zonta organization is having a dinner meeting on September 19 and the Speaker is Wally Funk. A cocktail reception is planned at 5:30 PM. They would welcome us to attend.

The motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Mary Kinnaw and seconded by Jean Murry. The meeting adjourned at 3:02 PM.

If you missed this event, It was a very well organized open house for Smartt Field. The weather was beautiful and there were a lot of planes on display that were very interesting. We met many nice people and had a great time!

The next meeting of the Greater St. Louis Ninety Nines will be Saturday August 29 at Smartt Field (St. Charles County Airport) This is the occasion of their open house. We will have an information table from 9AM to 4PM. Jean Murry will bring a canopy, folding table and chairs. Bring folding chairs for yourself if possible. Food will be available for purchase at the new “Fly Girls Restaurant’’ on the field, and it is reported the food there is quite good.

The meeting will start after lunch, about 1:30 pm depending on the traffic at the booth.

There is a change in the October meeting schedule - instead of meeting at Creve Coeur Airport we will be painting a compass rose at Greenville Airport (GRE). At the meeting on Saturday we will try to identify the weekend with the least conflict plus an alternate time in case of inclement weather. If you cannot attend the meeting please e-mail your choice of weekend to girlpilot@sbcglobal.net We will need to get back to the folks at Greenville with the information in early September.

We look forward to the Chapter Birthday Party which will be at noon on Saturday, September 19 at Jean Murry's home. A pot luck is planned so bring goodies! This is always fun so be sure to attend.

The Gateway Chapter of the Missouri Pilots Association is sponsoring a speaker, Fred Schiezer, Professor Emeritus in the Aviation Dept. at the University of Central Missouri. His program will be “What Really Happened to Amelia Earhart”. This program will be at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, September 9 at the Columns Banquet Center in St. Charles. If you would like to eat dinner with the Missouri Pilots, dinner buffet starts at 6:30 pm and the cost is $15 per person. For dinner reservations call Jean Murry at 314-469-3541.

Chairman Libby Younger called the meeting to order at 12:40 pm.

MINUTES: The minutes from the Installation Meeting were read by Mary Kinnaw. There was one correction, Martha Norman will also be attending the International Convention in Chicago along with Jean Murry and Jan Pocock.
Vivian Waters made the motion to approve the corrected minutes and this was seconded by Gussie Freese and passed.

Treasurer’s Report: Martha Norman absent. Her report was presented by Mary Kinnaw.
Nelda Lee made a motion to give a $100.00 donation to the Amelia Eahrhart birthplace and home. After some discussion, this was seconded by Jan Pocock and passed.

Chairman Libby Younger asked to set up meetings for the coming year and they are as follows:
*August 29-30 Smaart Field Open House from 9-2PM. We will have an information table with flyers and we need workers there. On Saturday the 29th a meeting will follow lunch at 1PM at our table.
*September 26th 12 Noon-Our chapter birthday party will be a pot luck luncheon at the home of Jean Murry.
*October 17 or 18, Sally Siebe is planning a meeting at Creve Coeur Airport. The information will be provided later.
*November 14, Clayton Library 11AM at the corner of Clayton and Central. Libby will be presenting a talk on 99 Years of Women in Aviation, 1910-2009.
*December 12 at noon – Christmas Party at Jimmy’s on the Park. Delia Greer will host.
*January: MACTS To be announced later.
*February: Gussie Freese will host a Pot Luck Lunch.
*March 20: Wings Of Hope. Jean Murry will host.
*April: Highland Winet Glider Port – Kayleen Amerson and Ann Mongiovi will host.

Compass Rose Painting. It was decided to do the painting at Greenville Airport in October when the weather is cooler. Libby will talk with the folks at that airport to get the needed survey prior to our painting. This should be a two day project.

Newsletter_Chapter is now Mary Kinnaw.
Publications Chairman is now dropped since there are no other publications.

Libby opened a discussion regarding our Library Displays. Gussie said she would be happy to continue as chairman and it was decided that we should be open to having our displays at other locations as well.

Nelda Lee reported she had attended the Forest Of Friendship and there were 33 inductees. She said the Forest was looking very beautiful and the program was extremely interesting. She suggested more of our members should attend or visit.

International Convention: Jan reported our chapter is responsible for the Hospitality Room and they need help with the refreshments there. Vivian Waters made the motion to have our chapter donate $500.00 for food purchases and after some discussion It was decided we could make up the difference if more money is needed. Nelda Lee seconded the motion and the motion carried.

The motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Mary Kinnaw and seconded by Jan Pocock and the meeting adjourned at 2:44 PM

We have the clubhouse and swimming pool from 11 am to 5 pm. II suggest lunch at 11:30 am and meeting at 12:30 pm. I will bring sandwich meat and bread and everyone else should bring some sort of covered (or uncovered) dish.

To get to Chapter One Club House from the east, take I-270 or MO-141 (Woods Mill Rd) to US 40 (I-64) west. Go across the Missouri River into St. Charles County to Exit 10 (MO-94) toward St. Charles. Turn right at the exit ramp and go approximately 0.5 mi to Siedentop Rd. Turn left on Siedentop and then continue straight onto Hemingway Lane (Siedentop goes off to the left) to the Club House.

Agenda items will include planning for the Smartt Field open house 29-30 August. We will have a table there. What are we going to do - sell anything? Who will work and what time? Saturday and Sunday or just Saturday? I anticipate it will be busy Saturday 10 am to 2 pm. I don't know about the busy times on Sunday. I have attached the Smartt Open House flyer

Also since it's the beginning of the year we need to do committees chairmen again! I would also like to get some type of meeting schedule arranged.

I also would like to know if our chapter would like to support the By-Laws amendment proposed by the Jedi Council of the Ninety-Nines organization. That is also attached. (it and the rationale for it are 4 pages long - these are certainly ladies who cannot be brief).

MAY 23, 2009

This meeting was called to order at 1:20 PM by Vice Chairman, Jean Murry in the absence of Chairman Sally Siebe. The meeting followed a Luncheon at Jimmie’s Café on the Park, in Clayton Mo. This was our Installation Luncheon and Jan Pocock was in charge of the installation of new officers. Immediately following the Luncheon, the ceremony was begun and the new officers are:

Secretary: Mary Kinnaw/Martha Norman

Each incoming officer received a potted Spring plant.

Board Of Directors: Delia Greer, Sue Mathias, Vivian Waters and Jan Pocock.

This election was done by ballot and Jean Murry destroyed the ballots following the installation.

Libby Yunger said we now have 40 members on the roster with 26 local members. 18
ballots were cast. She said she plans to have the members volunteer to either plan a meeting each month or have the meeting at the member’s home. The new tine for meetings will be the third Saturday of each month. This has been established with International.

NIFA: Martha and Jean talked about the activities at NIFA and their experiences as judges.

Jean Murry and Jan Pocock are planning to attend the July International Convention in Chicago and discussed some of the plans. They are encouraging others to attend and showed all the plans for the convention which looked very interesting and fun also. It was a beautiful Spring day and a wonderful time was had by all attending.

The meeting was called to order at 10:30 am by Chairman Sally Siebe. The March minutes were accepted. There was no treasurer’s report.

Jan reported on the NC Spring Section meeting in Milwaukee.
1. The Fall NC Section meeting will be Oct 23-25 in Grand Rapids MI.
2. There will be a planning meeting for the International meeting in Libertyville IL in June
3. Sales tables for Ninety-nines chapters will cost $30 at International this year
4. The 2010 International Conference will be at Kona Hawaii.

People are needed to work at the NIFA meet May 17-23.

After perusing the menu for Jimmy’s Café on the Park in Clayton, the members agreed to hold the Installation Luncheon on May 23 at Jimmy’s.

Five compass rose patches were sold at the NC Section meeting. The remaining patches were taken to the SW Section meeting. We will also attempt to raise money for the Chapter by selling our luggage tags through Waypoint. The cost is $3.50 each, which includes shipping.

We discussed ideas for future meetings. Suggestions included going back to Flight Safety, or having a program at the Science Center with Greg Mariniak. We invite suggestions from other Chapter members.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:15 am.

Between 10 am and noon we will also man a table that will have information about the Downtown Airport and the museum and will hand out information about the Ninety-Nines to interested girls/women. There will be food for sale at the event if any members wish to eat lunch on site.

The Cahokia YMCA is on the former Parks College Campus. Camp Jackson Rd is IL-157. To get to the YMCA from the north or from West County, take the IL-3 south exit off I-64 (US-40) and turn left at IL-157. The YMCA is on the left about 0.4 miles from the IL-3/IL-157 intersection. IL-157 is divided and it may not be possible to turn directly into the YMCA parking lot. If that is the case continue to Donald St. and make a U-turn. If you are coming from I-255 or across the Jefferson Barracks Bridge, take the IL-3/Great River Rd exit (exit 10) and go north about 3 miles to IL-157 and turn right.

Sometime this spring or fall we will be painting a compass rose at Greenville IL airport (KGRE). The folks at the airport have the paint and have offered to feed us! Present at the meeting: Teresa Camp, Gussie Freese, Jean Murry, Martha Norman Jan Pocock, Vivian Waters, Libby Yunger, and former Ninety-Nine Marge Nulsen. Delia Greer was present for lunch but needed to leave early.

The meeting was called to order at 12:50 pm by Vice-Chairman Jean Murry. The February minutes were read and approved. Martha Norman gave the treasurers report and that was approved.

Jean Murry and Jan Pocock are going to the NCS Spring meeting in Milwaukee WI and will take our compass rose patches to sell. Jan, Jean, and Martha Norman will be attending the International Convention in Chicago in July. There was a discussion of the logistics of obtaining supplies for the hospitality room, but Jan and Jean will have more information after they return from the NCS about the types of things our chapter will need to contribute.

Our April meeting will be at the Healthy Kids Day event at the Cahokia YMCA on Saturday, April 18. Additional information will be in the April newsletter.

EAA AirVenture at Oshkosh will feature Medical Mission Groups this year. John Teipen, persident of the Greater St. Louis Flight Instructors Association has asked the Ninety-Nines to volunteer 2-3 hours at KidVenture to “teach the kids something” about aviation. Additional information can be obtained at www.avtrain.net/YEFE.

Martha Norman confirmed that the dates of the NIFA SAFECON 2009 are May 17-24 at Parks College and St. Louis Downtown Airport. They will need volunteers to help with the testing, message drop and landings. Contact information is in the March newsletter.

The Chicago Area Chapter of the Ninety-Nines is celebrating their 75th anniversary on April 19th from 11 am to 1:30 pm at Bravo! Cucina Italiano on the site of the former Glenville NAS.

Everyone in the chapter sends good wishes to Chairman Sally Siebe. She is on medical leave from work due to disk problems in her back. On top of that, her father suffered a heart attack while on vacation in Florida. Wings of Hope arranged to transport him back to St. Louis.

Creve Coeur airport has many wonderful old aircraft in various stages of restoration. If the weather is good it’s fun to just wander around and see what’s going on in the various hangars. If you can, plan to fly-in. Creve Coeur has both a paved runway and an excellent grass strip. If you are driving, take I-270 to the Page Ave Extension (Exit 16B, SR 364 W). Exit at Maryland Hts Expressway (exit 17). Go north approximately 1 mile to Creve Coeur Mill Rd. Turn left on Creve Coeur Mill Rd. and you will drive right into the airport.

March 27-29: North Central Spring Meeting “Wings over Milwaukee” at the Best Western Hotel, 5105 S Howell Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53207. March 27: AIAA Family Film Night at the Boeing Prologue Room: Fly Away Home is the story of a family of orphaned geese, a 14-year-old girl and her dad, a couple of ultra-lights, and their (successful) attempt to lead the geese home. International Conference News:

The Greater Cincinnati Chapter is asking everyone’s help in collecting door prizes for the Hospitality Room at the Conference. Items should be aviation related, but they could be anything that you would like receiving as a gift. This means all items should be "new". If you have something to donate to the cause, please get it to Jean Murry (314-469-3541) or Jan Pocock (636-394-5734) to take to the NC Section Meeting at the end of the month.

Ninety-Nines Awards:

Each year the National Aeronautic Association (NAA) in conjunction with the Ninety-Nines present the Katharine Wright Award. This award was established in 1981 by the Gates Learjet Corporation and is made annually to a woman who has contributed to the success of others or made a personal contribution to the advancement of the art, sport, or science of aviation and space flight over an extended period of time. The first award was given to Moya Lear, wife of Bill Lear. The award was named in honor of Orville and Wilbur Wright’s sister, Katharine. She used money from teaching to purchase supplies for her brothers’ experiments, nursed Orville back to health after he crashed in Ft. Myer, VA, contributed ideas to their experiments and trials, and acted as a public figure to endorse the safety of flying and the Wrights’ aircraft. She not only provided financial support to her brothers’ endeavors, but also emotional, mental, and public support to her brothers as well. The deadline for submissions is March 31. The nomination consists of a Citation (a statement of no more than 30 words that captures the essence of the nominee’s achievement) and a nomination of not more than three (3) pages that includes the name, address, telephone, fax, and e-mail address of both the nominee and the person making the nomination plus concise details justifying the award and pertinent background or supporting information. The meeting was called to order at 2:20 pm by Chairman Sally Siebe. The January minutes were accepted. Martha Norman gave the treasurers report and that was approved.

Sally Siebe announced that our chapter web site has been updated by Laura Million. It now has a blog spot that contains all the past newsletters and meeting minutes, links, and other information.

The Library exhibit is currently at the Jefferson County Library and Gussie Freese will move it to the Brentwood Library in March.

Gifts are needed for the raffle at the International Conference. Anyone who has suitable items for the raffle should bring them to the March meeting or give them to Jan Pocock or Jean Murry prior to the North Central Section meeting at the end of March. Jan and Jean will also be bringing supplies for the Hospitality Room to the International Conference in Chicago in July. The NC Section has allocated $2000 for the hospitality room and every chapter is also asked to make a monetary donation.

Sometime this spring or fall we will be painting a compass rose at Greenville IL airport (KGRE). The folks at the airport have the paint and have offered to feed us! Ninety-Nines Awards:

The North Central Section gives out three awards. Submissions to NCS must be postmarked no later than March 13, 2009, or can be submitted by e-mail by the end of the day on March 16, 2009. Additional information will be available at the Chapter meeting on February 21 or can be obtained by contacting Marcia Nellans and Deborah Kirschner at director@ncs99s.org .

The Spinning Prop Award recognizes the NCS member who logs the most general aviation hours in the 1-year period between March 1, 2008 and February 28, 2009. All hours for which the pilot did not receive any compensation are eligible. Safety pilot and student pilot time are eligible but simulator time is not eligible. Each chapter may submit one applicant for this award. To apply, submit your name, the date you joined the 99s and the total number of qualifying hours to Jan Pocock (224 New Ballwin Rd. Ballwin, MO 63021) or Libby Yunger (girlpilot@sbcglobal.net) . If you have the most hours in the Chapter you will be asked to submit hard copies of your logbook for the applicable period.

The NCS 49½ Award recognizes a support member of Ninety-Nines. All “significant others” (that could be a husband, partner, sister, mother, father, etc.) are eligible and can include activities that occurred from the date the member joined the Ninety-Nines to now. The member should compose a letter of recommendation – remember this is a service award not a flying award – and send it to the NCS directors at director@ncs99s.org or send a hard copy to Deborah Kirschner at 4006 E. Crystal Lake Ave, Crystal Lake, IL 60014.

The NCS Governor’s Service Award honors a Ninety-Nine who has provided continuous service to the organization. All Ninety-Nines are eligible except current International and Section Officers and Board members. This award takes the member’s entire history of contributions to the organization into consideration. Each Chapter may submit one nomination. To nominate a section member, the Chapter Chair will compose and submit a letter or recommendation. If you feel that one of our members should receive this award, please make your suggestions to Sally Siebe (sally.siebe@sbcglobal.net) or to Jean Murry (33 Oakland Hills Dr., Chesterfield. MO 63017).

Congratulations to Nelda Lee for being named an Outstanding Woman in Aviation by the Women with Wings Chapter of Women in Aviation. She was presented the award at the 4th Annual Awards Banquet at the Midwest Aviation Conference in January.

Minutes of the meeting of Saturday, January 17, 2009
at the Midwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show

Present at the meeting: Teresa Camp, Gussie Freese, Delia Greer, Ann Mongiovi, Jean Murry, Jan Pocock, and Libby Yunger.

The meeting was called to order at 2:50 pm by Vice Chairman Jean Murry. The November minutes were accepted as corrected. Libby Yunger gave an abbreviated treasurers report that was received from Martha Norman. We again raffled a goodie basket and sold chocolate bars. These activities brought in $74. The MACTS charged $50 for the table.

Jean Murry and Gussie Freese were appointed to the nominating committee.

Libby Yunger handed out information and registration forms for the Spring North Central Section meeting in Milwaukee, WI, from March 27-29, 2009.

Upcoming events:
February 21, 2009: Jean Murry will try to arrange a tour of the new control tower at Downtown Airport.
There are no plans yet for the March and April meetings.

Libby Yunger has talked to the manager of Greenville Airport. They have the paint and look forward to getting a compass rose painted on their new ramp sometime this year. We will solicit guidance and assistance from other chapters who have more recent experience painting a compass rose.

The library exhibit is currently at Florissant Valley. Vivian Waters donated an airplane to the exhibit to replace the red paper Lockheed model. Libby Yunger announced that she will be giving a talk entitled 100 years of Women in Aviation, 1909-2009 at Maplewood Library on September 10, at Grand Glaize Library on October 20, and at the Gateway Chapter MPA meeting on October 14.

Ann Mongiovi announced that there will be an airshow at Scott this year but the date has not bee set. They have been asked to be placed on the Blue Angels air show schedule.

Our chapter will again have a table at the MACTS and a goodie basket or two to raffle off as a fund raiser. Our meeting will be held at our table as soon as the crowd from the Super Safety Seminar abates.

To get to the Maryland Heights Center, take I-270 to the Dorsett exit (exit 17). Go west approximately ½ mile then turn right on McKelvey Hill Dr. The road jogs right at Ameling and then left back onto McKelvey. The Maryland Heights Center is on the right (east) side of the street next to the Aquaport.

Ninety-Nines Events

The Ninety-Nine’s Museum is planning a Fall Foliage cruise along the northeast coast in 2009. The 7-day cruise starts in New York City on October 3rd and travels north to Boston MA and Portland ME along the New England coast then on to the Bay of Fundy and Nova Scotia Canada before returning to New York. The Museum will receive $70/person for every cabin booked on this tour through Bentley Hedges Travel. Contact Bonnie Hedges at Bonnie1@bhtravel.com or call 800-467-7402 for details. The Air Race Classic will be held from June 23-26, 2009. Entries open January 2, 2009 and close on April 15, 2009. The race is 2359 nautical miles beginning in Denver CO (KAPA) with stops in Liberal KS (KLBL), Sweetwater TX (KSWW), Lufkin TX (KLFK), Russellville AR (KRUE), Grenada MS (KGNF), Sparta TN (KSRB), Jacksonville IL (KIJX), Racine WI (KRAC), and ending in Atlantic IA (KAIO). The race team comprises two licensed and current women pilots. Passengers may be women pilots with or without a medical or women student pilots. Aircraft are limited to stock or modified stock airplanes certified in the normal or utility category with normally aspirated engines of not less than 145 hp nor more than 570 hp rated for continuous maximum operation at full takeoff power. Chapter member Teresa Camp participated in the Air Race Classic in 2008 and would probably love to share her experiences with anyone interested in participating this year.
Eight members and two guests attended our Christmas luncheon at the Blue Owl in Kimmswick on December 20, 2008. Present were Mary Kinnaw and her husband Jack, Amy Laws, Nelda Lee, Sue Mathias, Martha Norman, Jan Pocock, Vivian Waters, Libby Yunger and Bob Kraemer. No business was discussed and we probably all ate too much but the conversation was lively and it was really great to catch up with some folks we haven’t seen in awhile. Since there was no meeting in December there will be no minutes!

Get ready for some good eating and some good fellowship and join us at our Christmas luncheon at the Blue Owl in Kimmswick. The shops in town will be open so it’s also a good opportunity to pick up some handcrafts for yourself or for gift-giving. Catch up with friends we haven’t seen in awhile. Jan Pocock reports that Amy Laws will be in town and will be at the luncheon. Bring your spouse, family, companion – everyone is welcome – and I know Bob Kraemer would love it if some other guys were there.

We have asked for the big round table, but we will only get it if we have 16-18 people to fill it. Therefore, please call or e-mail your reservation to Libby Yunger (314-725-0428 or girlpilot@sbcglobal.net) on or before Wednesday evening, December 17 so that I can let them know how many are planning to be there.

To get to Kimmswick take I-55 south (or north if you’re coming from Ironton or Carbondale) to Exit 186 (Imperial Main). If you’re coming from Illinois take I-255 across the JB Bridge to I-55 S. Turn east (left if you’re coming from the north) on Main St. After going through Imperial and passing US Rt 67, Main St. turns right and becomes River St. Turn left (east) at Becket/Kimmswick Rd (this may either be called Hwy K or Hwy O – it is actually Hwy O going toward Kimmswick). At the end of Hwy O turn right on 4th St and turn left at the next street (Main St.) and turn right at 2nd St. You will see the restaurant on the left and the parking lot across the street.

The contribution may have occurred at any time in the past or present, as a single action or a series of events.

A. Nominations may be submitted by any individual or group within The Ninety-Nines.
B. The nomination should be in the form of a one-page letter and up to three additional pages of substantiating material. The name, address and phone number of the nominee or the nominee's next of kin, if the nominee is deceased, should be included.
C. The nomination should give complete, but concise, details justifying the award to the nominee with such background information as considered pertinent, and any other relevant information, that would assist the Awards Committee.
D. Nominations from previous years may be resubmitted.

Present at the meeting: Gussie Freese, Ruby Fudoli, Delia Greer, Sue Mathias, Jean Murry, Jan Pocock, Sally Siebe, Libby Yunger.

The meeting was called to order at 1:35 pm by Chairman Sally Siebe. The minutes were accepted as corrected (the headquarters hotel for the 2009 International convention in Chicago is the downtown Marriott, not the Drake). Gussie Freese reported that per Martha Norman, there were no income or disbursements from our treasury.

Sally Siebe announced that the Chairman?s manual is now available as a down-loadable pdf file on the International web site.

Upcoming meetings:
December 20, 2008: Christmas lunch at 11:30 am at the Blue Owl Restaurant in Kimmswick
January 17, 2009: We will have a table and will hold our regular business meeting at the Midwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show at the Maryland Hts. Community Center.
February, 2009: Jean Murry will try to arrange a tour of the new control tower at Downtown Airport.

The St. Louis County Library charges non-profit organizations $10 for use of a meeting room. Gussie Freese moved that Libby Yunger be reimbursed from the treasury, Jan Pocock seconded, and the motion was unanimously approved.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:05 am.

Following the business meeting, Libby Yunger gave a slide presentation on her adventures at the Reno Air Races with the Rare Bear and Zipper Air Race Teams.

From 2002-2004 Libby Yunger was a fan sponsor of Rare Bear, a highly modified Grumman F8F Bearcat, that for many year held the course speed record at the Reno Air Races and still holds the Closed Course World Speed Record for propeller driven aircraftand the 3000 meter Time-to-Climb Record.. During the past two years she has tagged along with George Andre’s Zipper Air Race Team at Reno. In 2007 George came in second in the Formula One Gold Race and this year he won the Biplane Silver Race at Reno. Libby will relate some of her experiences hanging around the pits at the Reno Air Races.

The Mid-County Library is in downtown Clayton on the northeast corner of Maryland Ave and Central Ave.
If you’re coming from the west, take your favorite route to I-270. Get off of I-270 at Ladue Rd. Go east on Ladue Rd for several miles – Ladue Rd becomes Maryland Ave when it enters Clayton just east of I-170. The Library will be on the left hand side of the street (I think it’s the 8th stop light east of the first I-170 exit). If you are coming from the north or from Illinois north of I-70, take I-270 to I-170 south. Exit I-170 at Ladue Rd. Go east on Ladue Rd (it becomes Maryland Ave) about 8 lights. The library is on the left. If you are coming from the Air Force base area or from the south, take your favorite route to I-64/US40 west. Go on I-64 all the way to it’s current end where it will merge into I-170 north. Exit at Ladue Rd – that’s the second exit on I-170 so stay to the right side of the highway.

There is parking under the library – the entrance is off Maryland Ave just east of the library building. However, the folks at the library have asked that we park on the street if possible. There is free parking on Central and on Bemiston north of the library. There are parking meters on the street and in the lot on the northwest corner of Maryland and Central.

Skyline Aeronautics

Mike Gaffney sent the following announcement out :
TO OUR FRIENDS AND CREDITORS:
I am truly sad to report that after 6 and one half years, Skyline Aeronautics, Skyline Aeronautics Pilot Store, Skyline Aeronautics Maintenance, and Skyline Aeronautics Flight have all been forced to close their doors. Steadily rising costs over the past few years, coupled with the dramatic drop in disposable income this year caused by the current economic conditions and other factors, have reduced demand for the quality services that we provide. These factors have created a situation which has left us no choice but to close our doors for good.
Our bank creditor has moved to secure its liens on our building, accounts, equipment and all other assets, so there is no remaining money with which to pay out even a portion of what the company owes.
Starting Monday, the Pilot Store at 521 Spirit of St. Louis Blvd will be the site for a bank supervised “Going Out Of Business Clearance sale” for the next week to clear out remaining bank owned store and flight line inventory, computers, office equipment and fixtures. All sales are final. Cash or approved checks only.
I truly regret these circumstances and wish that the situation had turned out differently.

This March Samantha and I will move to Geilsenkerchen, Germany where I will work at NATO headquarters. I just couldn't turn down the job offer. :)

We drove from Sacile to Nave to eat calimari and fried sardines. OMG, buono. Only a couple of miles for Sam on a beautiful Ducati...her first time on a motorcycle. Sam is wearing one of my mesh (loaded with pads) jackets and was with a very safe driver. Nothing to worry about!

Monday, September 29
Hi!
Sam and I survived our first Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. We left Italy at 2200 Friday night with 98 other people divided between two tour buses. The people are all military but the tour company is not affiliated with the base (means more fun). We arrived in Munich at 0700 and headed for the Hofbrau beer tent (one of many). We waited in line until 0900 for the doors to open and the experience was terrifying but nobody got hurt. Once the doors open people start pushing to 'make' it through the doors before they close. Sam was shielded by one of the guys on the trip but she and her friend Belinda bailed and stepped out of line so I made it in and she was out. :( Thank goodness for cell phones as we sent messages back and forth until I came up with a plan to get her in.

Sam eventually got in through a back door but that's a whole different story. We had a great table with lots of fun people and the experience is one we will not soon forget. The beer, food and friendly people were awesome. After a few liters of beer Sam and I decided to catch a taxi to downtown Munich where we ate at the Hard Rock Cafe. That was my first hamburger since arriving in Europe. Can't take the American out of me!

We departed Munich at 1700 for Nuremberg where we checked into a hotel. Sam and I took showers and went right to bed. Sunday we toured the city and saw the building where the Nuremberg trials were held and visited Zepplinfield. Germany is much different than Italy as far as the way of life. I can already tell I will take many trips back to Italy after we move in March. After the tour we headed back to Italy and stopped at our traditional awesome restaurant in Austria.

If you have been to OFest then this will help you remember the good times. If you haven't then it's certainly a must for list of things to do.

The meeting was called to order at 11:30 am by Vice-Chairman Jean Murry. The minutes were accepted. Gussie Freese read the treasurerʼs report from Martha Norman.

The October meeting will be our Chapter birthday party. We will have a pot luck lunch at Gussie Freeseʼs home.

Martha Norman plans to have the membership book out in November.

Please give ideas for meetings to Jean Murry or e-mail your suggestions to Gussie Freese.

Jan Pocock and Jean Murry are going to the NC Fall Section Meeting in Columbus OH on October 10-11.

Our chapter has volunteered to run the Hospitality Suite at the International Meeting in Chicago in July, 2009. If you will be able to attend the meeting and help in the Hospitality Room please contact Jan Pocock.

Gussie Freese has signed up libraries for our traveling exhibit through the end of 2009. The list of libraries will be available at the October meeting and we need volunteers to set up the exhibit.

Both the Shiloh (take exit 19 off I-64) and the Belleville (IL Rte 161 between Belleville and Mascoutah) gates to the AFB will open at 9 am, or you can take Metrolink to the Shiloh-Scott station and there will be shuttle buses to the base. The show is free to the public and parking is also free. There is a pretty long list of prohibited items:
No backpacks (backpacks specifically made for cameras are okay, but will be searched)
No coolers
No knives
No weapons
No contraband
No helium balloons
No pets
No tents, awnings or beach umbrellas
No cooking equipment
No bikes, roller blades, scooters or skateboards
However, you can bring folding chairs to watch the airshow.
OTHER EVENTS:
Several other aviation-related events are also occurring on September 20:
1) Hangar Dance at the CAF hangar at St Charles County Airport (Smartt Field): The doors open at 6 pm and the band, Sentimental Journey, plays music for dancing beginning at 7 pm. 2) The Great Forest Park Balloon Race is on Central Field (by the Jewel Box) in Forest Park. Balloon Glow is Friday night, September 19, from 7:00-8:30 pm. The race festivities are Saturday from about noon until 6 pm but opening ceremonies are at 3:30 pm and the Energizer Hot “Hare” Balloon is scheduled to ascend at 4:30 pm with the other balloons scheduled to launch after 4:45 pm. The rain date for the race is Sunday.

AVIATION NEWS:
After February 1, 2009, distress signals emitted by 121.5 Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs) will no longer be monitored by the International Cospas-Sarsat Agency. The satellites will process only signals from 406 MHz ELT transmitters. 121.5 may still be monitored by overflying aircraft and will be monitored by ground stations, such as the CAP. However, this may be of limited value in sparsely populated areas. Therefore the FAA recommends that aircraft owners retrofit their aircraft with 406 MHz ELTs or carry a handheld 406 MHz personal locator beacon. Each Sunday Creve Coeur owner, Al Stix, prepares a barbecue lunch with a choice of meat, salads, and dessert. Price for the lunch is $6, so it’s really a great deal (but remember that although there may be two or three different meats offered, each person can select only one meat!) The meeting will follow at 1:30 pm in the FBO meeting room.

To get to Creve Coeur Airport from the North, South or East, take your favorite route to I-270. Get off I-270 at the Page Avenue extension (Rte 364 West). Exit Rte. 364 at Maryland Hts. Expressway (you can only go north). The entrance to the airport is about 1 mile on the left. To get to the Airport from St. Charles, take I-70 east to Earth City Expressway South. This will become Maryland Hts Expressway. The entrance to the airport is about 3 mi from I-70 on the right. Of course, for those of you with airplanes, you can always fly in (1H0).

There will be no Chapter meeting and no Newsletter in August.

Other Upcoming Events

EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI, will be held from July 28 through August 3. Jean Murry will be working in the Ninety-Nine’s tent for one day. This is a great opportunity to tell women pilots about the benefits of membership and the scholarships available to flight and academic students. Other members planning to attend AirVenture are encouraged to stop by the Ninety-Nine’s tent.

Another opportunity at AirVenture is KidVenture, the Young Eagles Flight Education (YEFE) program. It will be open from 9 am to 3:30 pm daily, except Sunday when it closes at 2 pm. There will be programs for folks of all ages from toddler to adult! They are looking for volunteers to man the 10 YEFE learning stations: Registration, Regulations, Weather, Navigation, Human Factors, ATC, Aircraft Design, Pre-Flight, Flight Training and Post Flight. KidVenture is called a destination for fun through education that focuses on Science – Technology – Engineering – Math (STEM). The meeting was called to order by Chairman Sally Siebe at about 1:30 PM after our Installation Luncheon at Oliver’s on St. Louis Downtown Airport.

There was no special installation ceremony. All elected officers, since they were the same as last year, were asked to continue the duties as they did last term. All agreed.

The minutes were accepted as sent on in the newsletter.

The treasurer’s report was accepted as presented.

Old Business and Committee Reports:

NIFA: The NIFA National SAFECON to be held in May 2009. Host school will be St. Louis University – Parks College and the official airport will be St. Louis Downtown, Cahokia Illinois.

Library Display: The Library Display is on schedule. Gussie will be contacting libraries.

The date of Greenville Compass Rose painting has not been set at this time. Everything is ready at the Greenville Airport. Martha reported that both compass roses at St. Louis Downtown are in use and they are glad that they were there.

Our June meeting: June 21, 2008 at Vivian Water’s at the Club House at 12:00 noon.

Fred Harms is retiring from the FAA. There will be a “Roast” for him. Don’t know the time or place.

Spring Section Meeting Report: There were 96 members present at the meeting from 14 Chapters. The International Convention will be in Chicago in July 2009. Jan volunteered the Greater St. Louis Chapter to be coordinator for the Hospitality Room. There will be a special program on Girl Scouts.

Waypoint: Check your e-mail address in the International Directory and correct it if necessary. Waypoint will be e-mailed using that address.

Motion was made by Gussie that Vivian should determine how to vote for the Chapter at the International Convention this year concerning the International By-Laws that will be decided on. Motion seconded by Jan. Motion carried. Vivian will be a/the Chapter Delegate to the International Convention in Anchorage Alaska this year.

St. Charles Airport: Donations are requested for the office at the St. Charles Airport due to the fire there and the loss of facilities and furnishings.

Immediate Section Meetings: The Fall Section Meeting will be October 10-12, 2008 in Columbus, OH. The Spring Section meeting will be in Milwaukee.

Martha moved that the meeting be adjourned at 2:48 PM. Delia seconded. Meeting adjourned.

March meeting: Saturday, April 19, 2008
Tour of the Missouri State Police hangar and their fleet of aircraft at Spirit of St. Louis Airport (SUS). Meet at the Spirit of St. Louis Main Terminal at 9:45 am. Someone from the State Police will meet us there and escort us to the hangar.

There will be a meeting following the tour, and we will have lunch together at a restaurant in the Chesterfield Valley after the meeting.

Items Under Consideration:
1) Space is the theme of this year’s Learning for Life Adventure Days (day camp) for children in grades K-6. The organizers have asked the Ninety-Nines to participate. Sally Siebe will have more information at the meeting on Saturday.
2) Our Installation luncheon is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, at 12:30 pm, in the banquet room at Oliver’s Restaurant at St. Louis Downtown Airport. We will order from the menu.

Our tour of the St. Louis County Police Hangar and aircraft was led by member Patrice Mullins, a 27 year veteran of the St. Louis County Police. She is currently a Senior Pilot and has amassed more than 6.000 hours flying helicopters. Her police work has yielded some very exciting experiences and we enjoyed hangar flying with her during and following the tour.

Our meeting was held in the conference room at Jet Corp where we were joined by Christine Malcomson-Young, a member of the San Gabriel Chapter and Lear Jet captain with FlexJet. She was sitting stand-by at the airport and seemed as thrilled to have something to do as we were to have her at our meeting.

The meeting was called to order at 11:35 am by Chairman Sally Siebe. The minutes were accepted as written. Martha Norman read the treasurers report, which was accepted, and gave an unofficial account of the money available in the Del Scharr Scholarship fund. We have had inquiries but no qualified candidates for the scholarship this year.

Libby Yunger and Martha Norman will audit the books in June.

The Installation Luncheon will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at 12:30 pm at Oliver’s Restaurant in the main terminal at St. Louis Downtown Airport. Martha Norman will send formal invitations to all members. Since all current officers and directors have agreed to remain in office next year, no ballots will be sent to the membership. Chapter dues of $15 will be due in May. Libby Yunger will send a list of the names and addresses of the current chapter members to Martha and to membership chairman, Jean Murry.
Delia Greer, Jean Murry, and Jan Pocock are attending the North Central Section meeting in Osceola IA in April. Vivian Waters is attending the International Convention in Alaska.
The second issue of the Waypoint is available on the NC Section website. Hard copies should arrive by snail mail before the end of April.
Gussie Freese will attempt to get more information on the Learning for Life Space Camp scheduled for May 5-9. We will man a booth at the camp if feasible.

Our speaker will be Rose Church, RN. Rose was a McDonnell-Douglas employee and the head flight nurse for the Mercury and Gemini programs. She knew all of the original astronauts and has many great stories both about the testing and training for the space program and about the astronauts themselves. This should be an excellent program so I hope all of you who are in the area can attend.

If you’re looking for the minutes of the January meeting, they were accidentally deleted from my computer and will be distributed at the meeting on Saturday. I will send copies of the January and March minutes with the April Newsletter.

Just a head-up so everyone puts this on her calendar. Our April meeting will be on Saturday, April 19, at the Missouri State Police hangar at Spirit of St. Louis Airport (SUS). We will tour tour the hangar in the morning (I think about 10 am) followed by our meeting and a group lunch. Details will be in the April Newsletter.

The Maule Award is available to any 99 who does not have tailwheel time and would like a rating in order to spread her enthusiasm to the aviation community. The New Pilot Awards are available to FWPs who have soloed, have passed the written (if required), have a current medical (if required), and have a financial need.

North Central Section Awards:
Nominations close March 15th for the Governor’s Service Award and the Spinning Prop Award. Information for submitting nominations are on pp 21-22 of the January issue of Waypoints. By now everyone who does not receive their copy electronically should have received a mailed copy. The nominations should be submitted to the NCS directors, Deb Kirschner or Karen Ness.

One other big thing is that I got married on 15 Jan 08. The only way that my (now husband) could get orders to Italy was for us to be married and we decided that our relationship was too wonderful to miss the chance to spend out lives together. Sounds like drama but it's not as we will be very happy once we are finally together. My 16 year old, Samantha will join me in May then Jason and his 13 year old son will move here in June.”

Our scheduled speaker, Ruth Church, RN, was unable to attend due to illness. Our chairman, Sally Siebe was unable to attend due to a broken rib from a fall. A card was signed and sent to her. Prior to the meeting the members and their guests had lunch at Oliver’s restaurant in the Downtown Airport terminal and had a tour of the Museum and hangar lead by Museum volunteer, Jack Ambercrombie.

The meeting was called to order at 1:25 pm by vice-chairman, Jean Murry. Libby Yunger read the minutes and they were accepted as written. Martha Norman read the treasurers report and it was accepted. Martha announced that our net income from the raffle at the MACTS was $169.

Delia Greer, Jean Murry, and Jan Pocock are attending the North Central Section meeting in Osceola IA in April.

Martha Norman announced that the NIFA National Competition will be May 4-10 at Middle Tennessee University in Murphreysboro, TN. Martha has already volunteered to judge and additional judges are needed. Anyone interested in judging should contact her.

The Midwest Fly-In at St. Louis Downtown Airport will be on May 24. The Museum does not plan to have speakers this year; however it will be hosting a Girl Scouts aviation badge program in conjunction with the fly-in and open house. Since Delia, Jan, and Jean will be involved with the Girl Scout program, we decided not to have a Ninety-Nines booth at the fly-in.

Our meeting will be at the State Police hangar at Spirit Airport on April 19. We will have a tour of the hangar at 10 am followed by a meeting and lunch. Libby Yunger will make arrangements for our Installation Luncheon on Saturday, May 17 or Sunday, May 18. Jean will ask Vivian Waters about hosting a swim party and pot luck at the Chapter One club house in June or July.

The MACTS will be scheduled differently this year than in the past two years. The Super Safety Seminar has been reinstated and will be held from 8 am to 12 noon on Saturday, January 19, at the Busch Student Center. The Trade Show will be held from noon to 5 pm following the Super Safety Seminar – they will not be running concurrently. Booth traffic should slow down by 2 pm and allow us to hold a meeting in the booth area.

We will again be selling luggage tags and auctioning off a goodie basket. Jean Murry has asked that each of us bring a goodie (bottle of wine, crackers, cookies, candy, room temp cheese or sausage, etc) for the basket. She will provide the basket and the wrapping materials.

Ninety-Nines Awards: The January 15th deadline is rapidly approaching for submitting nominations. Chapters, individual members, or groups of members can submit nominations and the nominees can be living or deceased, and from any country. The contribution may have occurred at any time, past or present, and may be a single action or series of events. The Award of Achievement is given to a 99 (or a group within the 99s, such as a chapter, section, Trust, etc.) in recognition of contributions made to The 99s or to aviation in general (such as aviation history, education, science, exploration, etc.). The other two awards are presented to non-99s. The first one, the George Palmer Putman Award, is given in recognition of support of The 99s. The other award, the Award of Merit, is given to recognize a contribution(s) made to aviation in general. Each of these awards may be presented to an individual or an organization. Individual winners may be male or female.

Each nomination should be a one-page letter and should include the name, address, and phone number of the nominee (or the nominee’s next of kin, if the nominee is deceased). Three additional pages of substantiating material (resume, newspaper articles, letters of endorsement, etc.) may be attached.

WAYPOINTS: The January issue of Waypoints has been distributed electronically to everyone with an e-mail address and should have been sent to everyone without e-mail. Congratulations to editor Sally Siebe for producing a very professional-looking magazine and to the contributors for their well-written articles.

Air Marking: Our chapter is planning to paint the compass rose at Greenville Airport in April or May. Libby Yunger has the Air Marking Manual from the Mid Atlantic Section and will also contact the chapters in the North Central section that are experienced Air Markers. The meeting was called to order at 2 pm by chairman, Sally Siebe. Libby Yunger read the minutes and they were accepted as written. Martha Norman read the treasurers report and it was accepted.

We raffled two baskets of goodies at the MACTS and earned approximately $160 for the chapter. Jan Pocock moved that we put the money from the raffle into the Del Scharr Scholarship fund, Gussie Freese seconded the motion. The motion was approved.

Sally announced that the deadline for submission of articles for the April Waypoint is the end of March. The type of stories she is looking for expand on the chapter quarterly reports. Suggestions for stories include a story with pictures of our library display, Martha might write on NIFA, Teresa might right on the Air Race Classic or on getting a seaplane rating, Jean might write on the exhibit at the MO History Museum, Vivian might write on ballooning or her photography, Anne might write on soaring, and Libby might write on flying the T-6. Deadline for the July issue is the end of June. Submissions should be made to Sally Siebe.

The new North Central section website is www.ncs99s.org. Members will need to enter a user name and password to enter the members’ only section. The Waypoint and registration forms for NC Section events will be available on this website.

The library exhibit is at the Mid-County Library in Clayton in January. Kayleen Amerson is taking the exhibit to Mascoutah IL in February. We need to make an inventory of everything that is in the library exhibit. We also need to decide whether we are going to keep the exhibit going beyond December 2008.

Libby Yunger is looking for a committee to oversee organizing everything for painting a compass rose at Greenville Airport this Spring. Ann Mongiovi and Martha Norman offered to help, though Martha would be unable to attend planning meetings.

Delia Greer, Jean Murry, and Jan Pocock were named to the Nominating Committee. Jean proposed that we keep the same slate of officers for next year. Delia seconded the proposal and it was approved.

The deadline for nominations for the Forest of Friendship is April 15. This year’s theme is security and solice in flight.

The Scott Airshow will feature the Thunderbirds this year. We can put up an information table at Scott to attract new members, but we cannot sell anything. No decision was made concerning whether we would participate.

Jan Pocock reported that Kim Atkins accepted an assignment in Italy beginning the end of January and would be there for at least a year.

Jean Murry will try to arrange a February meeting at the State Police Hangar at Spirit Airport. The March meeting will be in conjunction with a Girl Scout badge program at the GSL Air & Space Museum.

Present at lunch at holiday luncheon and meeting: Gussie Freese, Nelda Lee, Jean Murry, Jan Pocock, Sally Siebe, Libby Yunger.

The meeting was called to order at 1:25 am by chairman, Sally Siebe. The minutes were accepted as written. Gussie Freese read the treasurers report and it was accepted.

Sally Siebe is looking for a copy of the Chairman’s Manual (Chapter Chairman’s Notebook). If you have this manual, please bring it to the next chapter meeting.

Sally announced that the January issue of Waypoint would be issued soon. Members with an e-mail address will receive their copies electronically. Members without e-mail will continue to receive a paper copy. The new format of Waypoint will include stories related to the Chapter newsletters. The newsletters will not be published but will be available on the NC Section web site. The NC Section is looking for a new web master.

There were no applicants for the AE Scholarship this year.

Gussie Freese reported that she will schedule our exhibit at the library in Florissant for August 2008. The exhibit will be at Mid-County Library in Clayton in January, and it will be Illinois at Mascoutah in February, Lebanon in May, and New Baden in November.

Libby Yunger announced that St. Louis Univ. is charging the Flight Instructors this year for use of the rooms in the Busch Center for the Midwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show (MACTS). Therefore, they are requesting non-profit organizations to donate $50 for their booths at the trade show. The trade show will be from 12 noon to 5 pm on Saturday, January 19, following the Super Safety Seminar, which will be held from 8 am to noon on Saturday. Brian Udell, survivor of an ejection from a jet fighter at supersonic speeds, and Cathe Fish will be the featured presenters at the Super Safety Seminar. Libby Yunger moved and Jean Murry seconded the motion that we donate $50 to the MACTS. The motion passed, 5 in favor, 1 opposed. We will again be auctioning off a goodie basket. Jean Murry has asked that each member bring something for the basket. She will provide the basket and wrapping. We will also be selling luggage tags.

The NC Midwinter meeting will be February 23 at Chicago Midway Airport. Information is in the Waypoint.

The deadline for nominations for the Forest of Friendship is April 15. This year’s theme is security and solice in flight.

The Ninety-Nines has a new membership form that is available on the Ninety-Nines International web site.

Old Business:
1) Sally Siebe gave a brief summary of her attendance at the Ninety-Nines International meeting in September.

New Business:
1) We decided not to accept an offer from the History Museum in Forest Park for “buy one get one free” vouchers to the City of Flight exhibit.
2) The deadlines for submission of material for the electronic Waypoint are:

June 1 for the July issue
Sept 1 for the October issue

3) Applications for the AE Scholarships are due 1 December.

2. AMENDMENTS (New Paragraph to go after Section ELECTIONS and before Section OFFICER DUTIES)

These Standing Rules may be amended at a regular meeting of the membership by a majority vote of the members in good standing present. The proposed amendments shall be submitted to all members at least thirty-days prior to the meeting. Members may vote by mail or e-mail as defined in Article X, Section 2, Item B, Paragraph 2 of the Bylaws of the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, Inc.

Teresa Camp moved we adopt this amendment as written, Libby Yunger seconded and the motion was unanimously approved.

3. EXPENSES (Paragraph 2 and make current paragraph 2 be paragraph 3.)

To encourage participation in the International Annual Meeting and in North Central Section Meetings, the Chapter Chairman or any one member in good standing who is giving a formal presentation at the meeting, may be named "Official Delegate" of the Chapter and may, in that capacity, request payment of the meeting registration fee from the Chapter treasury. It is understood that the named delegate is personally responsible for all other meeting related expenses including, but not limited to: travel, lodging, meals and entertainment. The naming of the "Official Delegate" will be done by vote of Chapter members in good standing at a Chapter meeting. That Chapter meeting shall be no earlier than the meeting preceding the "early" registration deadline of the event to be attended. The delegate and event must be entered into the minutes of that meeting. The "Official Delegate" will be named for only one meeting at a time. The "Official Delegate" must attend the business meeting and report to the Chapter at the next scheduled Chapter meeting. Her attendance at the specified meeting and a summary of her report will be entered into the minutes of the Chapter meeting following the event. Registration fees granted by the Chapter to the "Official Delegate" will be refunded to the Chapter in the event she can/does not attend the meeting.

It was unanimously agreed to table this amendment. The amendment is unnecessary since the Standing Rules already provide a mechanism for reimbursing expenses that a majority of the membership deems appropriate. Over the past three months, members have expressed concern that the Chapter does not have the funds to name “official delegates” nor should it send such a delegate to most meetings. In the rare event that a member merits attendance at a meeting and cannot attend without financial assistance from the Chapter, it is most appropriately handled as an individual request to the membership.

The meeting was called to order at 7 pm by Vice-Chairman, Jean Murry. The minutes had been sent out with the newsletter and there were accepted with no corrections. Martha Norman gave the treasurers report and it was accepted. Martha announced that all directories had been distributed.

There was no old business.

New Business:
Libby Yunger received the Airmarking Guide from the Mid-Atlantic Section at the end of September and determined that there is not sufficient time to plan the Compass Rose and assemble all the necessary materials by the early part of November. Therefore, she recommended that this project be put off until Spring (March or April). Libby will inform Angie at Greenville Airport of our change in plans.

The November meeting was rescheduled for Saturday, November 17 at St. Charles County Airport. The CAF Museum and hangar is open from 10 am to 2:30 pm on Saturday. We will have lunch at Kilroys in the main terminal building at 11:30 am with the meeting at 1 pm in the main terminal lounge.

Since the October meeting was in conjunction with the NIFA Regional Competition at Parks College and Downtown Airport, Martha Norman gave very informative slide presentation on the history and organization of NIFA and some of her experiences as a NIFA judge, She had previously given this presentation at the North Central Section Spring meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm.

There are a lot of folks at Creve Coeur who have restored or are restoring old aircraft, and there will be ample time after the meeting to snoop around the hangars. If enough members are interested, we may be able to get Al Stix to give us a tour of his museum of antique aircraft (for a fee). Also if Ken and Dot Kotik are there, they have the fanciest hangar in the Midwest which doubles as a gallery for Ken’s aircraft paintings.

From US 40: Take US 40 to I-270 North (toward Chicago). Get off at MO-
364/Page Ave. West. Take exit 17 for Maryland Hts Expressway. Turn right at Maryland Hts Expressway and go about 1.1 miles to Creve Coeur Mill Rd. Turn left – that is the entrance to the airport.
From MO-141 North: Take MO-141 north until it ends in Olive Blvd. Turn
right. At Creve Coeur Mill Rd. (I think that’s the next light) turn left. Follow Creve Coeur Mill Rd about 3.5 miles – it will cross Maryland Hts. Expressway and enter the airport.
From Illinois North: Take I-270 west across the river. Exit at I-70 West toward
Kansas City. Take exit 231A, Earth City Expressway S (after about a mile it becomes Maryland Hts Expressway). Continue a total of 3.3 miles to Creve Coeur Mill Rd. Turn right and enter the airport.

This was officially our Annual Meeting and birthday party. Jean Murry brought some of the chapter scrapbooks and cupcakes. The Chapter was started in 1941 by Del Scharr and is now 66 years old.

Old Business:

The Holiday Luncheon will be at 11 am on Saturday, 15 December at the Veranda. Because the luncheon is so late in the year, we will be collecting canned food and other non-perishables for the Circle of Concern at our November meeting.

Martha Norman distributed the Chapter Directory to all members present. Copies will be sent to the remaining members. Note that the Ruby Fudoli’s contact information is incorrect in the directory. Please update it as follows:

Jan Pocock has new information on the AE Scholarships

Martha Norman reported that 65 members were present at the Spring North Central Section meeting in Omaha and her talk was well attended. The Vice Governor of the North Central Section has resigned. The Michigan and Greater Detroit Chapters have merged and the Central Illinois Chapter has folded.

Kayleen Amerson has scheduled three libraries in Illinois for the remaining months in the library exhibit schedule. We will decide at a later date whether to continue the exhibit into 2009.

The Girl Scouts will be offering an Air and Space badge in Illinois. Jean is representing the Greater St. Louis Air and Space Museum. Laura Million and Kayleen Amerson offered to help out on the Illinois side and Jan Pocock is working on the Missouri side.

Jean Murry asked that we save the Millionaire Dollars from the Post Dispatch for her to give to the Wings of Hope.

Library Exhibit:

After a 2-month hiatus the library exhibit was installed on July 30 at the Rock Road branch of the St. Louis County Library on St. Charles Rock Rd. in St. Ann (it’s just west of the Vatterott College building). At the meeting in July, Gussie Freese accepted the Chairmanship of the Library Committee. Responsibility for the individual libraries was divided up among the members:

Mid County (Jan. 2008),

July meeting:

Circle of Hope Office

(on the east side of Lindbergh just south of Olive and Monsanto)

We will have a business meeting and lunch will be provided. This is a service project; we will be making Circle of Hope Bracelets or working on another similar project. Information on the Circle of Hope is appended to the end of the Newsletter. This is truly a worthwhile endeavor and we hope to see many of you on July 21.

Proposed Standing Rules Amendment:
At one time our chapter treasury paid the registration fees for the Chapter Chairman to attend the yearly International and Section meetings. At some point this practice was discontinued. After much discussion, we decided to bring the following amendment to the Standing Rules of the Chapter to a vote of the membership at the July meeting. Note that the payment of registration fees is not automatic; it must be requested by the Chapter Chairman or invited speaker.
To encourage participation in the annual North Central Section and International Annual meetings, the Chapter Chairman or any member invited to give a formal presentation at the meeting may request payment of the meeting registration fee from the Chapter treasury. It is understood that the Chapter Chairman or invited speaker is personally responsible for all other meeting related expenses including, but not limited to, travel expenses, hotel, meals, and entertainment.

Chapter Handbook:
The 2007-2008 Membership Director and Handbook is inpreparation. If your address, phone number, or e-mail address has changed, please give your corrected information to Martha Norman. Her e-mail address is cfifly170s@mail.tigernet.gen.mo.us and her phone number is 573-546-7472.

Library Exhibit:
Thanks to Gussie Freese, our library exhibit will be shown at libraries in St. Louis County from August 2007 through December 2008. We do have three months that are not filled: February, August, and November 2008. Please let Gussie or Libby Yunger know if you can schedule the exhibit at a library in your community. Also please let Libby (girlpilot@sbcglobal.net) know if you would be willing to help put up or take down the exhibit. The library schedule will be available at the July meeting and will be on our website (www.st-louis-99.com). If anyone has books, articles or other artifacts to add to our exhibit, please contact Libby. In order to insure that the exhibit items remain intact for the next year or two, we have laminated the posters and newspaper article on refurbishing the DC-3. We would like to submit an article on the library exhibit to the Ninety-Nines News. Please let Libby know if you would like to contribute to or assist in writing this article.

Message to Gussie on June 18:
Just wanted you to pass along to the ladies that I am doing well in Baghdad. It's super hot but I work inside so it's tolerable. I'll certainly have to share my stories and pictures of the busy schedule of flights in an out of here and also some interesting stories of being attacked. Yep, got more than I bargained for in the war zone.
I miss everyone and will be back in September.

Thanks for writing it's great to hear from you. We are okay here aside from all the action. This is certainly a life changing event which may be exactly what I need considering being newly divorced. This place is helping me to realize what really is important.

Message to Libby on July 10:
Thanks for writing it's great to hear from you. This deployment is good for me in many ways but mostly I will appreciate the freedom and luxuries we enjoy in America. I'll be glad to drive on a paved road, take a shower without wearing shower shoes, and most of all not duck and cover for incoming. You know I am an adrenaline junky but am very concerned about people being injured by rockets. I have many stories to share when I come home that I cannot discuss over e-mail.
Have fun with the summer air shows. I have one out my back door all day and night and love it.

Circle of Hope
As an executive board member of AMC Cancer Research, I have had the honor for several years of working with an exceptional group of women who are all breast cancer survivors, and who we honor in a Pictorial Tribute that feature their photos and inspirational quotes. The Pic Trib, as we call it, travels to different shopping malls, events and business in the St. Louis area to celebrate the survival and spirit of these amazing women.
One of the women honored was Fran Lefrak-Brown. Although nearly all the women are still with us, and fighting for the cause, we lost Fran last year to a recurrence. Her legacy lives on, however, in the Circle of Hope bracelet, which she created in 1999 after her first diagnosis in order to raise money for research. What began with Fran sitting at her kitchen table with crystal beads and silver hoping to raise a few thousand dollars has now exploded into an 501(c) (3)organization with hundreds of volunteers coordinated by Fran's husband, Jerry Brown. In just a few short years, Circle of Hope has contributed over $200,000 to AMC and other charities working for a cure. They have sponsored events ranging from Day of Caring to Walks for Women; have worked with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life; and been featured on several St. Louis news programs and in newspapers and magazines.
Their volunteers include everyone from women's groups to girl scout troops (including River Bend Senior Troop 111) to learning disabled children; even customers of Talbots. Talbots at Plaza Frontenac was so impressed with the design that they now sell them at special events, and will be introducing them to at least one additional Talbot's store in Indiana. The bracelets are also sold at several stores in the St. Louis area, with the best selections at Small Indulgences on Big Bend, and Ann's Bra Shop right around the corner at olive and Woods Mill.
In 2003, Circle of Hope continues to grow, with the introduction of a brochure to handle mail orders, and a new Web site. I have been giving Circle of Hope bracelets as gifts for several years now to friends, family, teachers and colleagues. They are beautifully presented, wonderfully crafted and always appreciated gifts. Bracelet making parties are a great way to help this all volunteer organization help meet the demand of their expanded marketing programs, and raise even more money for cancer research.
The nice thing about bracelet parties is that it doesn't matter how many people show up, or how much time they have to spend. Circle of Hope appreciates the effort whether the result is ten bracelets, or 200. People can stop by for 45 minutes, or stay for several hours depending upon their level of interest. And it's something that all ages can do (although I'd like to limit it to middle and high school age children), and which benefits all ages in that Circle of Hope raises money to fund cancer research and awareness programs.
Circle of Hope is a fabulous charity, and bracelet making parties are a lot of fun. There is no skill involved - Circle of Hope provides all the materials, and training takes only a few moments. We will probably have materials to make three or four different bracelets, so we can rotate folks around the tables so that they can meet new neighbors as well.

Fella who's seen it says it's well worth the trip. Quite an education on our region's relationship
with aviation. Lord knows, we've been involved in that!!

We'll have a brief meeting after viewing the exhibit.

Our Installation luncheon was a happy occasion! Not only did we install our new (?) Officers, but were able to CONGRATULATE our new chairman, Sally on having received one of the A.E.
Scholarships offered by Intnl so that SHE CAN CONTINUE WORKING FOR HER INSTRUMENT RATING.
She certainly deserves the award. She worked very hard for it. We're plenty proud, Sally!!

Our thanks to Gussie for a great job of installing, =and our condolences to "Russ for being the only male in the crowd. (Didn't seem to faze him, tho)

Oh, by the way, we're sorry about the conflict on our meeting date and the Komen "Race for the Cure". But try to find a date in June (or any other month) that doesn't conflict with something. How about going downtown on Sat. morning , doing your volunteer contribution thing and then heading for Forrest Park - Mid Town and the MO History Museum (A.K.A. Jefferson Memorial) and our get together by noon????????

MEETING NOTICE & NEWS LETTER
April 21, 2007

We get to tour Spirit of St. Louis airport tower, 10:00

To get there, head for the tower on Edison Avenue. Turn left on Beechcraft Road to parking lot just beyond the tower.
There is a waiting area on main level since only four of us at a time can visit the tower cab. After tours are over, we will have our business meeting.

Nominating chairman Gussie Freese has advised that we have a slate of officers for the coming year, as follows:
Chairman: Sally Siebe,
Vice Chairman: Jean Murry,
Secretary: Libby Yunger, and
Martha Norman will continue to manage our treasury.

Board members will be : Delia Greer, Sue Matheis, Vivian Waters, and Jan Pocock. All these lovely ladies will be installed at our installation luncheon in May. Invitations to follow.

Air Force member, Kim Atkins was our speaker for the Bellville Zontas on February 28th. We are certainly sorry to hear that she'll leave us for several months beginning in May. She'll be on another over-seas assignment. We're wishing her a safe trip and early return.

April 25th, is the first annual Missouri State Aviation Day. We'll want to go to Jefferson City to arrive at 10:00 AM and hopefully meet with out congressional reps. along with Missouri Pilots Assn., Flight Instructors Assn. Women in Aviation, well really, just about anyone connected with federal aviation to push AGAINST user fees, among other unfair taxes proposed against general aviation! We lunch in Jefferson City, then return to home base. Those who can, will fly in, otherwise, we can drive and share the ride.

The April 99s Public Library display will be in Illinois area near Laura Million’s home. Jean Murry will delivered the display items to her on Saturday, March 31st that she and Jan had picked up at the downtown St. Louis main library.

We will have a brief meeting in conjunction with the Mid - West Aviation Conferance
& Trade show being held at St Louis U., Busch Learning Center January 19 - 21.
We'll meet on Saturday January 20th at 1330 in the cafateria (opposite the hall
where we'll be exibiting our 99's)

We need to finalize the planning for the North Central Section Mid - Winter meeting
we will host at Doubletree Hotel and Conference Center on Saturday February 3rd.
(Registration form was in the Waypoint and will come on a seperate e mail )

On January 6th Sally Siebe will set up the 99's display at the Jefferson County
Library on higheway 141 and I 55 for the month of January. Do get to see it.

Library was very impressive. Sally took the pictures. Ask her!

Gussie passed along information that Nelda had fallen at work and broke her
"right wing" (shoulder ). She had to fly commercial to Georgia for family get-
together instead of planned driving. Hope she's lots better, now.
I don't know about our gals! Mary Kinnaw showed up at out Christmas Party
with a broken right wrist and Gussie had to make a couple of trips to the
hospital with vertigo attacks.
Hopping that 2007 will prove to be much healthier year for all of us.
